Middlebury or Hofstra (Money Matters)

Dear all, I’m now in a really difficult situation.
I got accepted to 2 US colleges – Middlebury in Vermont and Emory university( without any aid) . Also to Hofstra university in Long Island. I have to pay 50k per year to Middlebury. Our family is not rich and believe me if we are, I won’t be posting this like hell.
Do you think I should go to Middlebury and pay 200k for my Bachelor’s degree or do u think I should go to Hofstra with some scholarship ? Either way I have to pay since I am an international student. Please assist me finding my college. I would like to major in Computer science and Economics and later go to Grad school or law school.

Middlebury is a FAR superior institution and Hofstra is no where near Middlebury’s reputation, resources or campus. Hofstra is located in Hempstead, NY, a community that can be very dangerous (google Newsday.com and Hofstra student shooting). The only benefit to attending Hofstra is its proximity to New York City–about a 30 minute railroad trip. Go to Middlebury unless you want easy access to Manhattan.

Did you apply for FA at Middlebury? They guarantee to meet the full demonstrated need of every accepted student.

Yes, I did. But they think we can afford that according to our assets.

The two really aren’t comparable.
Can you use/sell some of your assets? Or if some of it is in real estate, can you rent part of it?
Can you give us (tuition+ R&B) - (grants+scholarships) = ?
What’s your parents’ budget? How would you/they pay for the rest?

There’s simply no comparison between Middlebury and Hofstra. If it is at all possible for youny using/selling assets, go to Middlebury unless, as an international, you’ll be able to do something at home with your Hofstra degree and are okay with that school (if you got into Middlebury, it’s unlikely Hofstra’s going to be very satisfying.) If neither is affordable, take a gap year and apply again, including more match schools. You could email Middlebury and ask for an oncampus job (as an international you wouldn’t be able to work off campus); you could also defer for a year: deposit and ask for a deferral, and work during next year in order to help meet costs, starting Fall 2015 only.

And, then there’s the issue of safety around campus: <a href=“DA: Officer Nikolas Budimlic won't face charges in fatal shooting of Hofstra student Andrea Rebello - Newsday”>DA: Officer Nikolas Budimlic won't face charges in fatal shooting of Hofstra student Andrea Rebello - Newsday;
