suggestions plz....................thanx!!!!!!!!

What appeals to you about these two colleges? Some specifics about them would help in giving advice and in you thinking about your decision.

If you can’t really decide then you shouldn’t apply to either one ED.

for momfromme…my thoughts on those 2 schools------carleton has always been my favorite because of its atmosphere and campus culture, i strongly believe that it would be a second home if i got admitted. as for mid, it’s a great school in liberal art subjects and it’s very generous to international students. plus i know that mid focuses more on experience and essays rather than sat score which i think would give me a better chance. however, i understand that i can’t go wrong to either, i wouldn’t regret for going any one of them. i just wonder which might be a real match for me and which i would have a better chance of getting in…by the way, my personality is extremely outgoing, talktive, i love making friends and having fun. so~~any ideas?? thanx for your reply

for shennie~~i think i wouldn’t go wrong to either and i don’t want to give up the chance of ED since i really need generous financial aid…thanx for your reply anyway, u have any ideas about those 2 schools? thanx

I’ve always interpreted Middlebury as slightly more outgoing. Both are great though.

thanx for giving me information again world changer~~i remember u helped me not only once, haha
all the best and thanx

anybody has any suggestions??
thanx
bump~~

If you really need financial aid, then you shouldn’t apply anywhere ED. If you’re accepted, you won’t be in a position to evaluate offers. That being said, Middlebury is need-blind for internationals, while Carleton is not.

Yeah, Midd tends to give better aid to internationals.

If money’s a factor, that might be something to consider.

I know Middlebury is very well respected for its summer language schools. It’s also supposed to be strong in English (like every other LAC in the world?). Other than that, though, I don’t know too much about either college.

Esti, I know both schools very well. Your comments suggest you have a pretty firm grip on their general atmosphere and qualities. If you need confirmation of your impressions of Carleton, look again at its web site. If you watch their student produced videos and read about their traditions, this will be one of those rare occasions where what you see is what you will get. Carleton is a supremely outgoing and fun-loving place where co-operation trumps competition and individualism and the non-traditional are allowed to flourish alongside serious academics. Middlebury is a similarly outgoing and fun-loving campus, but the vibe and the manner in which fun is pursued from parties to sports is much more East coast traditional (think Frisbee and broomball vs. basketball and hockey). I can tell you both are great places to spend four years. Only you know where you personally will feel more at home.

I, also, would not apply to a school ED if you need financial aid. If you are looking for what the schools are like, my daughter is a freshman at Carleton. What impressed us was the friendliness of everyone and the quality of the courses that she observed. She has found her professors to be accessible and helpful. Her courses are challenging and a lot of work. Lots of clubs and other activities. Carleton students pride themselves on being quirky intellectuals. The campus is very nice; facilities are good and the City of Northfield is a good size for shops and restaurants. It has transportation to Minneapolis so you can visit a large city. I would spend some time on the college website. You can access the newspaper archive and I believe you can also watch the videos from the festival they have every year. We didn’t look at Middlebury so cannot comment on it.

Esti, nice to see you back! Well you already know my views regarding Middlebury :D. Carleton is also a great school, very open towards internationals. If you’re dead set on Carleton, by no means do ED since they’re not need-blind.

I never understood this talk of not applying ED if you need aid. Most colleges will not offer a place until and unless they can provide aid and if you are not happy with aid you can always opt out of the binding agreement on the financial grounds.

A student requiring a full ride has a pretty simple situation. He needs money to cover full cost or he cant attend.

Carleton will probably defer you if you apply ED because they have clearly stated on their site that they would consider all ‘major’ awards during RD only.

Good Luck

thanx for everybody here…all of you have given very useful information…for ajayc, it’s a great pity that i always can’t open carleton’s website,so for carleton’s admission policies, i didn’t really invest that that much~thanx a lot for reminding me this
good luck to all and all of u have been extremely helpful~lol…

I get the sense that these schools are pretty different; not to mention they are located 1,000 miles apart, a factor people usually seem to ignore on here. I’ve long heard Middlebury called “the home of the beautiful people” and Carleton “the home of the ugly people” and from what I have seen that stereotype has generally rung true (obviously, there must be some exceptions); so that is another major difference between the two.

Hmmmm…sorry to break the ice here, but I think an SAT of 2000 is a bit of a stretch for Middlebury, though being an international student maybe that helps. Middlebury is in the elite elite crowd of LAC"s. Most kids I know who applied and got in had SAT’s over 2150 and their Math and CR scores were well above 1400. It never hurts to try, but be prepared for what comes.

Carleton is also extremely competitive and your SAT may not cut it there either.

So I would also select some schools a bit further down the list. It looks like you are focusing on small LACs and there are many out there that would snap you up with those grades and scores, so take a bigger look.

Its not a good idea, in any event, to get too emotionally attached to any one school before you get their admission decision. Too many kids in the United States make that mistake. Its perfectly normal, since its what you want to do…but you have to be a bit more objective and sanguine about the prospects as the number of applicants to colleges is skyrocketing and its becoming harder and harder to get in, particularly to very prestigious schools.

I dont want to rain on your parade or hurt your feelings, but frankly, an SAT of 2000 is very good, but not excellent…and both Carleton and Middlebury typically get the cream of the crop students with scores much higher than that.

Don’t feel bad. You are among many very good students and there are lots of great colleges out there waiting for you. Or, retake the SAT and see if you can bump it up 150 points or so to improve your chances.

If you still want to apply to Carleton or Middlebury, it doesnt hurt to try,but you would be better served not being too attached to either one at this point and wait and see what happens. As far as applying ED, that is a mixed bag. If they are not needs blind, then your financial status may also weigh in on their decision. Some US colleges feel like they should give financial aid to domestic US students ahead of foreign students. Others dont differentiate. Some colleges admit international students who can afford to pay the full tuition cost. So be careful and do your research ahead of time.

It would be sad if you got in and they didnt offer you any or enough financial aid.

And don’t forget, that sometimes it is better to be a bigger fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond, and I am not just talking about the size of the student body…but also academic standards.

You dont want to attend a college where you are stressed out all the time, unhappy, struggling to survive and otherwise miserable. Better to be happy and outgoing and doing well.

Think about that.

Carleton and Middlebury are outstanding colleges. BUt they are not easy schools or party schools. Only the best and brightest get in there.

friedokra``thank u so much for your sincere suggestionsI have one more chance to take SAT1, i’ll try my best to make it better~however, am still not quite clear about one thing, as we all know, usnews has given a rank for some collegeswould the rank truly reflect something? i was also looking at hamilton before, nevertheless, i just found mid and carleton the happiest colleges on my list…i want a happy second home so i chose them~anyway, the chance of getting in is also a major concern~~so, as my status shown at the beginning, what type of school would be good ED options for me? thanx

Carleton guarantees to meet 100% of your demonstrated need regardless of whether you apply regular decision or early decision.
