Middlebury vs. Colgate

I've applied regular decision to both Middlebury and Colgate, and I was wondering if anyone had any insight on the differences between the two in terms of academics/student body/social atmosphere etc? I've had the opportunity to visit Colgate, but I have not been able to visit Middlebury yet, so I am unsure of what Middlebury's campus "vibe" is like.

@blueeyes1997‌ I was torn between Colgate and Middlebury for ED II. Eventually I chose Middlebury. I didn’t have a chance to visit either school, but here is what I got out of an extensive comparison:

-Middlebury has somewhat of a better academic reputation and is a bit more selective.
-Middlebury is particularly well known for its social sciences and foreign languages. That’s not to say it’s weak in the sciences. It was voted as having the 6th best lab facilities of any college/university by Princeton Review.
-Midd’s coursework is quite challenging.
-Colgate seems to have a pretty big drinking and party scene with lots of fraternities whereas Middlebury appears to be more tame and has no greek life.
-Though both campuses are beautiful and scenic, I’d argue that Colgate has the nicer campus.
-Colgate is a lot more focused on athletics-being a Division I school and all.
-Both schools are preppy, but Middlebury is more diverse.

My conclusion is that you’ll find great academics and “the college experience” at both colleges. If you’re more focused on the former, Midd would be the better choice.

If anyone thinks I’m mistaken, please feel free to correct me.

@burak96‌ thank you so much for your insight! When I visited Colgate, I definitely picked up a strong Greek presence on the campus, which is something that does not appeal to me. Middlebury seems more well-rounded socially because it does not have Greek life. I think I would choose Midd if I were lucky enough to be admitted to both schools… Good luck for EDII! Do you mind me asking what your stats are?

I think what @burak96 is saying seems accurate. Oh one more thing… their food is the BEST hands down.

Ate their couple times during my sister’s graduation and while I visited, man best out of all the colleges.

Good luck with your application! I’ll probably be EDII or RD there!

@blueeyes1997‌ Yeah the Greek life kind of turned me off as well. Perhaps I’m a boring person, but my idea of college life isn’t going to frat parties and drinking yourself into a coma 4 nights a week.
I wouldn’t want to pollute this thread with my stats- so here is a link:

@thecoolboy1234‌ I’ve read that Midd doesn’t have a swipe system or meal plans which means dining is pretty much free for all. Quite frankly, I don’t know if I should be excited or worried about the infamous “freshman 15”.

Good luck to both of you as well.

@thecoolboy1234‌ I heard the same thing about the food at Midd! Good luck with your application

@burak96 you have amazing stats and extracurriculars! Good luck with ED II!
