hey everyone. so i realize that one of my peers, izzy busy bee, already made a thread like this, but if any of you have questions about middlesex i can answer them...ask away about revisit day or waitlists or residential life or anything, id be glad to help!

Hey peab2011, so, I got waitlisted at Middlesex. What are the chances of actually getting off of the Wait List?? Have you heard of anyone actually getting un-waitlisted? Thanks.

how many people get in off the wait list varies by year. last year, the school had a higher yield that expected, so too many kids that we accepted chose us and i doubt many kids got off the waitlist. in my grade (the applicants from two years ago) i have friends who got off of the waitlist. so in conclusion, it could go either way. sorry that i cant give you a more definite answer…you should contact the admissions office to inform them of your continued interest in attending middlesex. sometimes they let kids who are high on the wait list go to revisit days. i hope that helps!

Yeah, I already called the Admissions Office and told them that I’d like to remain on the Wait List. But, thanks peab2011. I sure hope I get off of the Wait List, though.

What is like being a new junior at MX, and being a sports recruit. If was told there was only two spots does that mean that I will room with the other new student.

@JoshByron: I got waitlisted at Middlesex (11th grade) too. Looks like among the 2 people accepted, Hcos12893 is going to enroll. I don’t know if the other person is on CC. I think my chance is very slim.
Here’s an email I got from Middlesex:
Dear …,

Thank you for your note. Please understand that this was our most
competitive year to date in terms of admissions and you have applied to
the most difficult pool to be admitted. This year we received over over 70
applications for 11th grade and we only accepted two students.

I trust this information is helpful.

Best,

Mr. Bailey

What do you like most about Middlesex?
What do you like least about Middlesex?
How is the mathematics program, I am really interested in math so how difficult is it?
How does the schedule work?
How do your classes get chosen?
Is there a lights out policy and if yes what is it for 9th graders?
Lastly, are students aloud to have laptops/tv’s in their rooms? (Just curiosity, I know how focused you have to be going to a academically rigorous school like middlesex)

BoardingSchool, thats crazy! Out of 70 applicants, they only accepted two!!! Damn, then we dont stand a chance. I got a similar e-mail from Cate School, where they were asking me if I would repeat 10th grade. They stated that they only got 12 11th grade male applicants and only one spot to fill.

@JoshByron: I got waitlisted at Cate (11th grade) too. We have pretty similar choices. They told me they waitlisted over 20 girls (11th grade only), I don’t know about guys. Geez I didn’t know there’re so few spots for 11th grade until I got waitlisted by 8 schools!

Whoa! You got waitlisted at 8 schools!! How many did you apply to in total? I got waitlisted at 2 (Choate – my first choice, and Middlesex), rejected by 2 (Taft and Cate) and accepted at 3 (Northfield Mount Hermon, the Putney School, and St. Marks).

JoshByron

I wrote a first choice letter to MX, in addition to being the soccer coach’s number one recruit helped a lot. MX is trying to build a really successful program. He told me that the head of admissions really supports the effort and is working together with the coach to make it possible. also i got an 2307 on the ssat, and i am a full pay applicant, and im mixed raced (i dont really think that it matters at all) im sorry that they did not select you
im kinda of shocked myself that i got in with the acceptance rate under 3 %.

Hcos12893,

OMG! I can’t believe you got in!! I was in touch with the baseball coach throughout the entire year. I thought we really clicked Although I did horrible in the SSAT, I’m also full-pay and mixed race. But, whatever. Choate was actually my first choice :D

Lol actually I don’t feel so bad, because not many of those 70+ applicants make it this far like we do (waitlist). Yeah I applied to quite many schools Let’s see… I got rejected by Taft and St Mark’s, waitlisted by 8 schools. I’ll wait for them and see.

I got around 2300 in SAT (not SSAT), but I do see why they picked Hcos12893. Those stuff make you stand out, and I think you deserve to get in :)

thanks i guess its a shame that they can’t take more kids. i guess I’m just lucky i didn’t sleep the entire two weeks leading up to the D-day. i was a nervous wreck. haha i hope you get off those WL and a 2300 on the SAT is very impressive. any school would be lucky to have you

Whoa, Boardingschool, we practically applied to the same schools!!! And, a 2300 on the SAT is awesome!!! Congrats!

to everyone: i am very surprised that they only accepted two kids. there have always been at least four new juniors every year before this that i’m aware of, and they accepted about 15 for these spots, not two. i suppose it makes sense- the class of 2012 (next year’s juniors) is already very overenrolled. they have about 110 kids, and middlesex has only once ever had a graduation class of over 100.

@Hcos12893 being a new junior is fun but challenging. there were six new juniors this year, and both of the female new juniors live on my floor. it is fun because everyone knows who you are because you are one of very few new kids in the grade. however, it can be a little tiring being known as ‘the new junior.’ it is challenging because the courseload ramps up during junior year and most other kids already have at least one year of mx under their belts, they have been through the writing program, etc.
if the other accepted kid is also a guy and a boarder then you will probably be at least on the same floor as each other. there are plenty of sports recruits but these kids often are very smart as well. as a recruit keep in mind that your academics come first.

@sandakm
I picked mx primarily for its small size and academic strength. I feel extremely lucky every day for the incredible teachers, classmates, and opportunities that I am surrounded by. I like being able to play sports and do theater at the same time while still maintaining my grades.
I dislike the time constraints. Most kids at mx often are trying to balance a lot of things at once. As I mentioned above, I am grateful that I can do many things at once, but often it is very very tough to do everything you want and not get burnt out. Also, our student activities program and our weekend activities are kinda in a transition period, so this year we have to make fun for ourselves, which is great, don’t get me wrong, but I miss freshman year when there were a couple more events on the weekends.
The math program is strong. I am a junior in AP BC calc, so next year I will be taking multivariable calculus, a college course. Our math is numbered and goes by semester. For example, I did math 6 and 7 freshman year (algebra II and trig) then 8 (precalc) and 20 (prerequisite to BC) last year. Until you get to AP maths, they really aren’t that hard. However, I can say that math is easily my hardest course this year and although it won’t be AP next year, it will still probably be my hardest course. There is a lot of help available if needed.
We have blocks lettered A though H; blocks A through F meet five times a week, G and H meet three times. Full credit classes meet during A through F blocks or during both G and H. Half credit underclassman art courses meet primarily during G and H. Some classes only meet four times a week, so you have a ‘drop block.’ A free at the beginning of the day is a sleep-in, before lunch is an early lunch, and at the end of the day is an early finish. Wednesdays and Saturdays are half days; the other days all have L block at the end, which is when double period classes mostly happen. Only sciences, some histories, and geometry have doubles as far as I know.
You fill out a form before coming to Middlesex to choose classes. There are placement tests for some subjects. As a returning student you pick classes for the next year in April.
There are lights out at 10:30 for freshman only. There are various other rules about quiet hours for other grades but you won’t need to know that until you get here.
Students are expected although not required to have laptops in their rooms. There is a tech center for anyone who needs computer or printer access. Only seniors can have TVs in their rooms (they can also have video games and fridges).

I realize that was long-winded but I hope I answered everything!

Peab2011 You answered everything with great explanation, and I thank you for that. Do you think it would be cool if I PM you if I had anymore questions?

peab2011

i realize that academics come first after if i wanted to play sports all the time i would go to Shattuck St. Marys or IMG down in florida. Academics and playing my sport at a reasonably high level, not to mention its close proximity to an elite club program. would you say to get all of your homework done at a reasonable hour would you have to start right after dinner or can you take a 30 min to an hour break in between. also what boys dorms are the best. and when does preseason start. sorry for asking a lot of questions. thanks

Seems peab2011’s not on, but I can answer!
Homework: It is entirely possible to get your homework done at a reasonable hour! The trick (for me anyway, as a pathological procrastinator) is to be motivated enough to use some frees, afternoon free time, and study hours wisely- you don’t have to give up fun to get enough sleep. The easiest thing to do is set up a homework schedule of frees and extra time so that you’re less likely to procrastinate. Most nights you shouldn’t have so much homework that you can’t get it done at a resonable hour (though it does happen on occasion). Take breaks; long homework sessions will wear you out! Just be careful to not get sidetracked.

Boys’ dorms: Not sure about juniors and honestly it varies year to year (and it depends on who YOU are and who your friends will be). For freshmen I’d say RW is the best this year (for freshmen, imho). Overall I’d say BP and RW are the best though.
