Middling New SAT score

I just got a 1300 (620 writing, 680 math) on the New SAT (not counting writing).

How good is this score, and is it possible to use this to get into a high tier school? (cornell)

That’s not a bad score by any means – it’s actually pretty good. However, Cornell is a very selective and prestigious university, thus you’d need to boost your math up above 700 and your reading at least 50 points to have a much more legitimate chance at Cornell.

so around a 1400 would be good?

That’s the very first reporting of the New SAT score. When did it come out? My son’s score still hasn’t come out.

practice test

“Good” is relative. The 25-75th percentile SAT scores for any school can easily be found by googling: Common Data Set <>. Look at section C9.

For Cornell, a 1300 is below the 25th percentile.

1300 on the new SAT, which is out of 1600. That data isnt released yet

Depends in part on which college at Cornell you are applying to. Your scores are low for engineering, arts & sciences etc. Some of the land grant colleges like ILR and Human Ecology have lower 25 - 75 ranges and are more about “fit.” You can find ranges on SUNY stats site. In any event you’ll have to see what your real scores are. Good luck.

In our experience, practice tests are almost always harder than the real tests. Keep practicing, but don’t trust the score. What year are you? Have you taken the PSAT yet? That will probably give you a better idea of what your score on an actual SAT will be.
