Navy Soccer Tops the Nation in Five Statistical Categories

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team led the nation in three team statistics in 2006, while first-year starter Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) was atop the NCAA rankings in a pair of goalkeeping categories.

While Navy won a program-record 21 games and made its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last four seasons, it also left its mark on the final NCAA Statistics recently released. The NCAA ranked the more than 300 Div-I programs in five statistics - scoring offense, goals-against average, shutout percentage, save percentage and won-lost percentage - throughout the season. Navy closed out the 2006 campaign leading the country in goals-against average (0.372), shutout percentage (0.79) and save percentage (0.918). The Mids' 0.372 GAA is the 14th-lowest in NCAA history, while their .790 shutouts per game mark will go down in the record books as the fifth-best mark in NCAA history. Navy also turned in a program-record 19 shutouts in 24 games, the seventh most in the NCAA annals.

In addition to team statistics, the NCAA ranks individual performances for points per game, goals per game, assists per game, saves per game, save percentage and goals-against average. Barnes was the top-ranked keeper for much of the season in goals-against average (0.292) and save percentage (0.933) and ended the season as the nation's leader in both categories.

In addition, Soccer Buzz All-American Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) was ranked sixth in assists per game, averaging 0.63 per contest, while her 1.63 points per game was the 25th-best average in the country. Teammate Cassie Barbaresi (Bradenton, Fla.) owned the eighth-best assists per game mark, dishing out 0.59 assists per contest.
