Midshipmen learn value of biodiesel

Students in academy chemistry class make fuel from cooking oil

"I like my major, even though it's one of the harder majors, because we can do cool stuff like this," he said. "Earlier in the year, we learned how to refine oil, so there are a lot of real-world applications like that, unlike political science."

Somebody's always picking on the political science majors. :D

EE Final Exam:

Question 1 (100 points):

Using a paperclip, a piece of dental floss, the battery from your calculator, and your understanding of the EE principles discussed in class this semester, construct a working model of the Aegis SPY-1D radar system.

:D

That's what they do instead of learning Cel Nav? I'm glad Zaph learned all he needs to find his way around is his trusty sextant.

To be almost embarassingly honest, I didn't REALLY learn celestial navigation until I went to Navigator School prior to my second DIVO tour.

Once again, my abilitites to remember stuff failed me at USNA. While I struggled with HoMOTO and all that stuff at USNA (I was lucky to get a fix somewhere in the classroom), I was able to knock it out easy just 4 years later. Go figure.

I should point out that celestial nav is a BEAUTIFUL art, and one that defies explanation as to how the ancients and the explorers were able to do it with the "tools" they had.

I just hope they're learning this biodiesel crap as part of chemistry and not sacrificing something important for it.

Before the kickoff of the homecoming game, Mr. Carr, a student at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island, and his guide Midshipman 4th Class Ernesto Estrada, stopped by the academy's Hospital Point to get an up-close look at a SH-60B Seahawk helicopter - the Navy's version of the Black Hawk.

Is this the same Plebe Estrada from the movie Annapolis who was booted from the academy for supposedly not taking a shower? Actually, in the movie, Estrada was booted for an honor violation which the hollyweird types failed to understand even though they had a technical advisor from the Class of 1991.

Well, it wasn't me.

Who was it?

The Technical Advisor was Scott D. Carson, USNA '91.

Scott actually conducted a two-week boot camp for the actors in the movie.

Doesn't ring a bell (well, not a very large one, at any rate). I'll have to pull out the Lucky Bag and see what it says.
