Best and safest way is taking a taxi down 55th st/Garfield Blvd. Not sure the rules for Uber, but that would be fine too. Google maps says it takes 33 minutes. It might be costly ($38ish), but it’s minuscule compared to the cost of tuition so let’s put things in proper perspective.
2nd best way is the CTA bus. Google says it takes 45 minutes, but I’ve heard of it taking over an hour if the bus stops a lot, plus walking from the bus stop.
There is also some shuttle that costs somewhere in between but has to be booked in advanced.
Interesting back and forth. Now, does anyone have any opinion on how to get from O’Hare to U CHicago next Friday evening? With all the bags for a move-in? (probably cab, right?)
@MindLife Depends on the people:luggage ratio.
If you have more than 2 pieces of luggage per person and lugging it around is very difficult, you’ll want to take an uber or a cab from O’Hare because you really don’t want to lug that across the CTA. It’ll be expensive.
If you can carry it onto the CTA you basically have three options:
- Uber/Cab all the way there (very expensive)
- Take the blue line to one of the loop stops (Jackson would be preferable, because it's closest to UChicago) and uber/cab from there
- Transfer to the 6 bus (runs south along State), the green line (at Clark/Lake), or the red line (at Jackson). The 6 will take you to Hyde Park, get off at 57th or 59th. If you take the L, get off at Garfield and take the 55 bus eastbound and get off at Ellis. It's complicated, I know...the hub-and-space system isn't really designed to be easy to get from O'Hare to UChicago :( it's why people say to go to Midway.
Since moving into college is overwhelming and you probably don’t want to be figuring out the CTA on the same stressful day that you will be settling in, meeting your roommates, etc., I strongly recommend option 1 or 2. Option 2 will be about half as expensive, and I think that has the best balance of price and ease. An uber from downtown is usually only about $20, while getting a cab from O’Hare can run up to $60 or $70 (yikes). Taking the blue line from downtown is super easy, just follow the signs to the “Trains to the City”, get on the train, and get off at Jackson.
