After posting a chance me thread, it seems like I'll likely be able to get into UIUC, IU, Miami of Ohio, and Iowa in hopes of majoring in communications. Academically speaking, which one has the best communications program of the four? If you know any details about the schools in general or in specific, that would be appreciative.

I might minor in something like buisness, if you could consider that a bit as well.

What type of program related to communications? For instance IUPUI just started a media commuication program geared toward media relations/political commuications. Some programs are more geared toward public relations or corporate communications or mass media.

Have you looked into Ball State? Communications is top notch there. It might not be Big 10, but if you’re making a decision based on their communications program, you should look into it.

Northwestern University
Syracuse University (I consider upstate NY close enough to the Midwest)
University of Missouri

I know a few students in the communication program at Iowa, all are happy with choosing Iowa. Iowa typically excells in most of it’s programs. If Iowa isn’t financially affordable you may want to also consider Missouri.

Most big state universities offer a communication major; most selective private universities do not. The top-ranked schools overall that offer Communications would include UPenn, Northwestern, and Cornell. You can look up the overall USNWR rankings for Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Miami OH etc. That may be a better basis to choose one of these schools than trying to judge the department quality based on anecdotal reports from a few people here.

You could look at the NRC/Chronical assessment of graduate Communication programs.
[NRC Rankings Overview: Communication - Faculty - The Chronicle of Higher Education](<a href=“NRC Rankings Overview: Communication”>NRC Rankings Overview: Communication)

Sorted by S-Rank High, it goes: UIUC (Speech Communications), Indiana (Mass Comm-Tel); … Indiana (Mass Communications)…UIUC (Communications) … Iowa (Communication Studies … Indiana (Communications & Culture). I don’t see Miami of OH on the list at all.

Also Ohio University
