My school does not calculate midyear grades, however, I will soon have quarter grades (1st and 2nd quarter) and midterm grades. How should I go about completing the midyear report with this info?

Thanks!

what country are you from?

US

/ten char

I would go with a 40/40/20 breakdown.

So the midyear grade would equal .4Q1 + .4Q2 + .2*Midterm

Midyear grades = midterm grades if it factors in Q1 and Q2 grades.

Hmm, my midterm grades are exams separate to Q1 and Q2. They count for 50% of the semester though. I’m just going to report my final semester average for each subject.

I feel like making something up like that really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…

By midterms I mean exams we have to take for (most) classes at the end of the 2nd quarter that account for a little bit (~7%) of our final grades.

Would appreciate it if an alum/MITChris could weigh in.

final semester average for each subject

In our school, for the classes that have exams, the midterm and final count towards a “5th quarter” that weighs a total of 20%. Of that 20%, the final is worth 13.3%, and the midterm 6.7%.

So, I suppose I could do something like [.2(Quarter 1) + .2(Quarter 2) + .067(Midterm)]/(.2+.2+.067). Is this acceptable? Again, my school does not provide an official final semester average.

Thanks!

I did not “make up” this system. It’s used by several high schools I know of, including my own. I am not so insolent as to report fake midyear grades.

In fact, it would produce similar results to the formula you just suggested.

how much weight should we place on the mid term exams? At our school they do not average in until the final exam and then 20% so maybe 45% each quarter and 10% mid term exam?
