Midyear Report/1st Semester Grades

How important is the midyear report in the admissions process?
I have received my first B this semester, but I still retained my cumulative class rank of #1, as there is a lot of grade deflation. Will one bad grade negatively affect my chances at an Ivy League like Columbia?

Mid year reports are extremely important to top colleges, as they show that you are continuing to get top grades. Getting one B shouldn’t hurt, as long as there is no big change to your academic performance.

Perhaps your counselor can advise Columbia about the school’s new measures on grade inflation. This can, of course, be done on the mid year report.

There is no big change to the rest of my academic performance, just that one class. Additionally, I qualified for Intel STS semifinalist, so I guess that could help?
Thanks.

If anything, one B isn’t going to make or break an admissions decision. A college won’t just reject you over one B.

Yes, and being a semi finalist for the Intel STS will show the college your continued efforts to be at the top so it should definitely be included.

Our school just finished 1st semester finals last Friday and midyear grades are not officially posted yet? I saw that the deadline for mid-year reports is February 1st. What if we don’t have an official transcript with 1st semester grades yet?
