I applied to a couple of US News rank 1-20 schools RD.
My first semester senior year only netted me a 3.429 GPA unweighted (4 B's). I know this definitely wasn't my true potential, but my GPA wasn't that great to begin with: 3.74, but I got 4.0's Soph and Jr. year.
Courses were kinda tough: 6 AP classes and 1 regular required class for graduation.

I sincerely believe I have a legitimate excuse that I do not wish to disclose here (has to do with our financial status =/)... I'd actually feel kinda embarrassed to explain to the colleges.

Should I at least attempt to explain my reasons to them?
ugh I really don't know what to do ;-;

EDIT: I'm thinking about doing really well this 6 weeks grading period (96+ in 7 AP classes - I KNOW I can do it), and getting my counselor to fax my grades to them with a personal explanation of my grades last semester. Does that sound good?

I probably do, but I’m a bit unnerved ATM.
I submitted my applications to my backup schools late and now I’m probably not getting the scholarships I was expecting to get. It’d be great if I were accepted to one of these schools because of the need-basis financial aid. ;

It shouldn’t hurt you though. Really, it shouldn’t. You can let your counselor fax them. Last thing they need is an applicant showing downward trend. But, still, it shouldn’t matter.

I’m afraid that 4 B’s after 4.0 the last 2 years is a real problem for top schools. Speak to your counselor and tell her what your reason is. She can help you decide if and how to explain it to colleges.

The top 20 schools are hard to get into no matter what your senior year grades are.
There are too many qualified applicants and the schools can not take them all.
Do not blame your senior grades if you are not accepted. No reason to feel badly or have any blame. You will never know why you selected or not at any school and we can only speculate.

Good luck. you sound like a great candidate that will have some good choices. Remember, as I’ve told me own kids, there are no rejections, only schools you are accepted too (the others don’t matter!)

Alright, I appreciate the insight everybody
I figure there isn’t any harm in sending a couple of decent grades, so I guess that’s what I’m gonna do.
Thanks again for the replies :o

lol I totally understand how you feel right now. Because my grades are HORRIBLE this semaster. (I’m only taking 4 APs though :P) I’m probably going to get a B-…(low 80s I guess?) and a B or B+.
