Hello so my midyear report came out and I’m disappointed. I attend the top public high school in my state.
My weighted GPA went from a 94.06 in Semester 6 to a 94.31 this semester (No unweighted GPA. Highest in my class is a 98/100, and ever in my school’s history was a 102/100)
However my rank went from a 21/210, or 10% of class, down to a 26/210, or 12.3% of my class. I am very disappointed because I heard that you need to be at 10% or higher to be competitive, and I’m applying to Northeastern, BC, and others.
Will this seriously affect my college decision? Thanks!
Does your high school report rank on transcripts?
It seems not weighing difficult classes would make it easier to game the system. Colleges will know that your high school doesn’t weigh, and would scrutinize your transcript accordingly, looking for evidence of honors, AP or otherwise rigorous classes.
AOs will consider you in the context of your school, however. So having the ranking on your transcript is… unfortunate - but it won’t be a huge red flag either. “It is what it is” at this point. If your test scores are as good as your grades, I wouldn’t let this hold you back from taking your best shot at Northeastern or BC.
I think you’re totally fine, colleges have the school profile to contrast your report with.
This being said, it simply means that they will compare your overall rankings and take into consideration how competitive your school is. Meaning that they may take the top 15% from your school and only top 10% from a school that may not be so academically sufficient
I’ve also heard rumors, that attending a resourceful highschool is unattractive for colleges as they want students who are underrepresented and independent, given the lack of resources they have. So it really depends on your school… I would say it doesn’t matter that much as long as other parts of your application are sufficient
I doubt it’ll make a difference.
Will they even know? Does the school resubmit transcripts and grades automatically or only if asked?
Most colleges request/require mid-year reports for RD applicants. Yes, you have to ask the HS to do so, but if you don’t your application is incomplete.
There are few things that have absolutely zero effect on an application, especially regarding addition grade information, but this certainly doesn’t “seriously affect” it.
