no its for schools that you have applied to, but havent heard back from yet (many privates who release decisions around beginning of April require midyears, but if you've already been accepted, you shouldnt need to send anything in)

Then why are the counselors at my son's school making such a big deal about him wanting to drop an AP class for second semester senior year? If he's been accepted, isn't he "done" submitting info to his schools of choice?

Maybe they're concerned it will affect his final report? Some schools require accepted students to submit final grade reports. Check your son's acceptance letter/package, they usually include something to the affect of "conditions of acceptance" that outline the requirements.

Do the schools usually begin looking at your application even before your midyear report is in (because of the disparities in when they do come in between applicants)?

oh yeah, most schools start looking at RD apps end of december and january, then as the mid years pour in, they can check it with the application that they have already reviewed or havent reviewed yet. every school is different, some schools dont make a final decision on anyone until March, some evaluate and decide as they go, provided the mid years dont change their decision, which would be hard to do.
