Might engineering not be for me?

So I'm only a second semester freshman but the curriculum thus far has left me with glazed eyes. This semester I am in Thermodynamics I and Intro to Structural Materials and I wonder if I could be less interested. The subject matter just doesn't feel very engaging. We learn a few concepts, a few equations, drill them and test. OTOH I'm finding DiffEq to be significantly more interesting learning the intuition behind why problems work the way they do. These added together make me think it might be wise to switch to a math major and take a wider array of humanities not allowed by the strict sequences of mechanical engineering curriculum. I guess what I'm asking is, as I move farther through the curriculum and towards a career will there be a drastic increase in... interest? Or am might I be better off switching if I don't find these classes remotely interesting?

It could be that MechE is not the right engineering major for you. Have you considered different engineering majors? Many fields within EE have a lot of math (cont. math) so that might be a better fit for you. Considering it’s only 2nd semester and you’re in primarily engineering classes, you’re ahead of most people. Unless your desperate to get out in 3 years, you should have some time to try some classes in a few different engineering disciplines and see how you like those. You could also do a more “mathy” math class, in the event those math classes are for engineering majors rather than for math majors.
