@woogzmama That’s true- Columbia decisions come out in a few days anyway. I was just feeling really anxious about how my list seemed to not be safe enough. Besides Columbia and UChicago, I only submitted USC and CMC (scholarship deadline), UCs (deadline passed) and WUSTL (no particular reason, I really shouldn’t have done it). One of my concerns is having enough time to write a supplement for a safety school. Which schools would you consider to be my safeties and matches?
@ucbalumnus I don’t have my transcript at the moment, but I’ll update with my UC GPA to give you better information. It seems that at this point, most scholarship deadlines have passed (based on my other scholarship deadlines, which were in Nov).
@intparent I think that the person who was hired and my parents have taken care of net price calculators and other financial aspects, then, since this person is hired specifically for college applications.
Thank you for the informative insight!
What do you all think about St. Johns University as a safety? Acceptance rate is 62.5%. This school is actually my mom’s alma mater, and she wants me to apply to the pharmacy program. However, pharmacy is way in the back of my mind. I want to major in econ, though I don’t mind pharmacy as a backup career choice. Should I apply to St. Johns (application fee has been waived according to mail that I received)? And if I do, should I apply to the pharmacy program? The only extra work I’d have to do is write an essay, which I haven’t found the topic for yet.
Pharmacy is a 6 year professional program. I wouldn’t go into it unless you were very sure that it was the right career path for you.
Do you think that St. Johns (no pharmacy program) is a reasonable safety school? Also, I thought that if I did apply to the pharmacy program it would be possible to transfer out if I didn’t like it. Was I wrong?
You would be able to transfer out it (or drop out), but I doubt few if any of your credits would transfer to a degree in economics.
In the end, you have to be the one to like the school you’re at and the courses you’re taking. Not cc’ers, not your mom. Take a few days to think about what is really important to you - location? major? size of school? type of school?
What do you mean by type of school, exactly?
I know what I want for major, and I have a preference for larger schools but can make exceptions (ex. I really like CMC, the small size doesn’t deter me). By location, do you mean urban/suburban/rural, or geographic location? I have a preference for urban but am open to suburban schools, but do not want to go to a rural school. Regarding geographic location, I’m not picky as long as it’s large-ish and urban, though I must say that I’m not particularly enamored sith Vanderbilt’s Nashville, TN location.
@intparent @bouders @ucbalumnus My UC GPA is 4.00.
Also, I did a bit of searching and found this: (http://admissions.temple.edu/sites/admissions/files/uploads/010-1415_Scholarship-Info_FINAL-ADA_508%20%281%29.pdf)
Temple University (61.7% acceptance rate, urban, PA) has what is apparently guaranteed full tuition scholarship for students with > or equal to 3.8 GPA, > or equal to 1420 CR+M. Temple would be considered a safety, right? Would you consider it a practically guaranteed acceptance? Does anyone know anything about this scholarship program, and is it really full-tuition for anyone who fulfills those requirements? Thank you very much for the suggestions and insight!
Yes, automatic for stats admission or scholarship can be considered a safety, if the remaining net price is affordable.
There are other automatic scholarships listed at http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/ . There are automatic admission criteria listed at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1562918-updated-list-of-schools-with-auto-admit-guaranteed-admission-criteria-p1.html . Be sure to check each school to make sure the criteria have not changed, and that the deadline has not passed.
I saw the first link, but not the other one. Thank you very much!
@woogzmama update: rejected to Columbia
Sorry about the disappointing news from Columbia. Good luck with plan B and beyond. I think Temple is an ideal safety for you. They are on rolling admissions, so you should go ahead and submit an application immediately so that you can receive some good news shortly.
@woogzmama Thank you for the kind words, I’ll definitely submit an app to Temple soon!
Temple Honors is a great safety for you (and ten times better than SJU.)
