Can you eat/drink in class or at the library? Also are any professors strict about cell phone use?

Haha thanks for answering :)

Can you eat/drink in class or at the library? Also are any professors strict about cell phone use?

Haha thanks for answering :)

Hey, so I’ve been to the libraries at UW (mostly Odegaard and the Healths & Sciences libraries) and they don’t mind if you have foods/drinks.

I’ve also been to a few class lectures (thanks to my older sis) and I’ve seen students texting during the professors’ lectures but being discreet about it. I think as long as you put your phone on silent and you’re not being disruptive, the professor won’t mind (then again it might depend on the professor you get).

Everyone eats/drinks in the library all the time and not once has someone ever commented on me doing so (even though there are signs posted all over the place saying not to lol).

As for texting it really depends on the professor/class. If it is a large class, then certainly they wont mind. If it’s a small class and the professor specifically says he does not allow texting then maybe you would want to think twice about it, but for the most part if you’re discrete enough you should be fine. Just remember to put your phone on vibrate!

For Odegaard, you’re not supposed to have meal type food, like pizza, but it’s okay for snack food (chips). I haven’t seen anyone been called out on meal type food, but then again, I haven’t actually seen that situation very much.

I’ll echo what the above posters said about texting. For calls, just… don’t answer your phone. If it’s an emergency, leave the room to take the call. It’s really distracting, even if it’s in a huge lecture hall.

So it would be ok (usually) to bring a coffee to an early class?

Thanks for the answers everyone!!

LOL all of the professor bring coffee all the time to their classes, of course it’s acceptable to do that. This is college, not high school. Everything is super lax, just don’t be loud or disruptive and generally you can do whatever during lectures.

Haha thanks for the reassurance! I went to a drop in class and thought I saw a sign that said no food/drink, but maybe it was just outdated :)

Yeah no one actually pays attention to those. Maybe if you have a really really strict Professor or TA they will state specifically that it is not allowed, but when you’re in a class of about 100 students anyway, it’s hard to individually nitpick.

So unless it’s verbally outlawed, I should assume eating/drinking is ok? Thanks for answering my ridiculous questions :)

Yes, now just relax The only thing you should worry about is your cell phone ringing/beeping in the middle of class. Vibrations are okay, but a ring or beep drives the typical professor nuts for obvious reasons, and they might even kick you out of the room for the day.

one of my classes doesn’t let us have our phones out for any reason during class (definately no texting)! and out of 450 students she can and will call out those that do

she also doesn’t allow eating

just depends on the teacher

So is that something she laid out on the first day of class (are there syllabuses in college? lol) or did she call some people out on it?

This isn’t elementary school, eat and drink whenever and wherever you want. some profs/ta’s are picky about cell phones but generally in class of more than 40 or 50 ppl you can text or something and nobody will notice.

How about just not texting during class?

Do you get in trouble if you accidentally doze off during lecture? This happen to me from time to time no matter how hard I fight to keep my eyelids open…especially in math class haha

Not with large lectures. Of course, if you’re in a class of 25, it might not be a good idea to fall asleep =)

Gotcha, just making sure haha thanks. I know every professors is different but thats my goal for next year is try to get enough sleep the night before.

This is an interesting read, pretty informative for a future UWash student ( I’m one ! ). Lol sleeping in classes, hmmm…
