In 2003, altogether more than 41,000 sought admission. This past year the count fell to 31,949. Why? For one thing, fear of assignment to Iraq or Afghanistan is taking an undisputed toll.

This turn of events of course works to the advantage of academy aspirants today, as the numbers jousting for admission are substantially reduced.

What is needed to qualify for a come-hither offer? Even with a shrunken applicant pool, plenty. The academies rank among our most selective institutions.

According to America's Best Value Colleges, the Naval Academy is the choosiest, accepting one applicant in 10....

nice, seemingly fair piece.

Are the app #s correct?

WP,

If you had watched to movie Annapolis, you would know that USNA has 50,000 applicants and that only 1,207 are admitted. That works out to a measly 2.4 percent acceptance rate.

Actualy, the numbers are in the right ballpark. The number of applicants peaked somewhere between 13K and 14K after 9/11; subsequently they dropped to about 10K.

I cannot take credit for this, for it was posted sometime ago when the discussion came up about the "free" tuition at the SA's.... it has stuck in my head ever since, however... so with due apology to whomever first posted this, please forgive me if I repost.... but truer words were never spoken...

"while the education is priceless, it is hardly free."

One need only look to the current stories around the '05 midshipman who is fighting for his life right now to know how true these words are.

IMHO, this may be the most expensive education anyone is ever asked to pay. That so many aspire to it is a testament to the caliber of folks the academies are asked to choose from...the cream of the cream of the crop.

GA ... Yea, sorry to say I wasted 2 hours on that sorry rehash of "Horatio Alger Goes to Annapolis And Makes Admiral in His Plebe Summer After Working Through a Few Problems And Catching His Buddy Jumping Out the Winder (Although He Didn't Realize It was Only the Second Floor and Lands in A Mulberry Bush) Who Can't Handle Rejection by His Company Commander"

2010 AMEN!

You actually went to see that thing?

Bad Pig! Bad Pig! No cookie!

;)

Worse. Rented it for the WHOLE family to enjoy. Surprised my kin remained interested in Canoe U. post-screening. Thank the good Lord He forgives mistakes.

I dunno, man. I seem to remember the Lord sending out a harsh memo adding "Screening 'Annapolis'" to "Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit".

Didn't you get it? ;)

wistlepig- you are in good company!

Hate to admit it, but I was missing my little fledging so much i went to see it not once, not twice, but three times....even dragged the family along....and the nana....and then bought the movie..... :o

and then we got there and saw what was really what....

navy2010 - thanks for sharing. That was a good laugh! I haven't seen the movie yet but someday I'm goin' to. My dh and sons have no interest so it'll have to be a chick-flick for me.

In that case you might wanna get the original "An Officer and a Gentleperson". Richard Gere is more of a "hunk" than the plebe-dude in "Annap" ... per my dd.

Lolol..."An Officer and a Gentleperson." I know lots of people like that movie but I think my boys would laugh their way through it because it seems kinda dated now. Except for Lou Gosset, Jr. - he was great. Mista Smoooove.

Actually, that movie got it all wrong, too. It's supposed to be "An Officer and a Janitor".

Ask any Midshipman and see if I'm lying to you. ;)

IT HAS BEEN argued in this space that for many Californians our community colleges offer educational value that can't be beat. Although the sticker price varies from campus to campus, the cost of attending a community college full time is roughly half that of a state university and a third that of a UC.

True, you won't find a faculty graced with Nobel laureates, but across the board the caliber of instruction ranges from good to outstanding....

Although whistle pig did possibly rent "Annapolis" I was fortunate enough to have missed the night we watched it as a family I suppose.
