What are typical careers for a communications major in the military, specifically Marine Corps? Also, what would some civilian counter-part jobs be? Thank you in advance for your help.

Marine4Life,

Well, I can tell you a little bit from experience about the Marine Corps. A communications major might be applicable to a…I forget exactly what the job is called…basically a public relations officer. Basically, they’re in charge of issuing statements from the base/unit/etc., to the public, maintaining the image of the unit. There are also “reporter” units that are responsible for journalism like activities in the military.

One thing to note, though, is that in the Marines you don’t sign on for a specific job as an officer. IIRC, you complete OCS/TBS, and based on your performance there you compete for top career choices. Basically, you’ll list what job’s you’d like to have and where you’d like to be posted, and based on what has to be filled you’ll be given preference towards your primary choices based on a sort of convoluted system based on how you’ve done at OCS/TBS.

Hope this helps,
Joe
