Military Veteran Finacial Aid

Yo. So i know there are alot of vets on this website who are currently attending a UC. I am an Iraq vet (Army) and will transfer in the fall. I will use Ch. 33 so free tuition and all its perks. I want to know if there is additional fin aid that we get? I would appreciate anyone with knowledge of this to fill me in.

Yes, you can get financial aid. I get chapter 33 and it is not counted against you when figuring eligibility for federal financial aid. I got a 2100 dollar Pell Grant and a 10000 dollar UC grant. All that went in my pocket baby! Yea!

Are we supposed to apply for financial aid now? Or when we already get accepted? Honestly, I didn’t realize I’d be eligible for financial aid so I didn’t even think about it.

Thats what I thought! Damn, I cant wait. What did you have to do for the UC grant? What UC are you at by the way? I heard different UC’s have different fin. aid.

I go to UCSD. I didn’t realize I could get financial aid till right before my first quarter at UC. I applied late in September and they gave me the 2100 dollar pell grant. Then in like November UCSD told me that they were going to make an exception and give me the 10000 UC grant even though I applied for financial aid way after the deadline. The 10000 is spread out over the winter and spring quarters so I just got 5000 of it so far. I’ll get the other 5000 right before the spring quarter. Hopefully I’ll get 15000 next year to split into three quarters. Veterans apply before you get accepted for aid for the 2010-2011 school year. You will not regret it. It’s free money!!! It’s insane! Getting paid to go to school!

To my knowledge FAFSA has to be completed by March 2nd. That is the only thing that I know to do for fin. aid

Yea, get it done before then and you should be good. I’m waiting on my tax info for last year to get it done. But im no doubt taking this free cash again next year.

Do you know what the income requirements are for the grants? Because I was still on Active Duty up until May.

I have no idea man. I applied for financial aid just because a counselor at UCSD told me it was a good idea. I was late as hell applying and have no clue why I got any money. I worked part time till about June last year and made about 7000 dollars. The UC grant was a surprise to me. I got a 2100 pell grant about 2 weeks after I applied, and then in early December I got this awesome email.

Dear USMC0311,
I am happy to inform you that you have been awarded UC aid for winter and spring quarters. You will be notified by email when a revised award notice is available on TritonLink for you. This is a onetime exception so please be sure that you complete you 2010-11 financial aid on time (file your FAFSA by March 2nd, and turn in any requested forms by May 1st ) as we will not be able to make exceptions next year for late applicants.

Awesome. I appreciate your help.

How does fafsa calculate eligibility? Do you need to provide them with proof that you need money and do they look at your bank accounts?

They calculate it based on money you have in the bank, and the income of you and your spouse if you have one. Having thousands of dollars in the bank doesn’t really hurt you though. I still have a nice hefty savings thanks to 3 Iraq deployments and it didn’t really hurt me at all. My wife makes close to 50,000 a year and that didn’t seem to hurt me either. I think as long as your income doesn’t exceed 60000 your food for most fafsa cash. Just apply, UC’s are very generous with financial aid. I got money flying at me from all directions thanks to the gj bill and fafsa.
