Millikin University - Decatur, IL

Hello! I was accepted in early February to Millikin’s BFA MT program. I spent the whole day there and spent the night in a dorm because I was interviewing for the honors program the next day (I also got the chance to sit in on the workshop with Sheri Sanders–so cool!). My experience as a whole was really positive, and I honestly loved the school and all the awesome, incredibly talented students I met. I think it’s interesting, though, that there are so many negative comments about the school and the program here, and I’d really be interested in talking to some more current students about what they personally feel are Millikin’s strengths and weaknesses. If anyone had the time to message me, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

Hello! My daughter was accepted into Millikin’s BFA MT and honors’ program. I’ve been searching for more information regarding the university and have found many negative comments about the school. I would be interested in hearing actual students’ perspectives. Is the program worth it? What is the faculty really like? What opportunities do the students have? Is the campus safe? I would really appreciate some input as she is trying to make some decisions. If someone could message me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’m a BFA MT at Millikin.
Don’t waste your time or money with this program. While the school has many good things about it, simply put, the MT faculty does not invest in their students.

Daughter is applying and auditioning to this school. I’d love to hear some honest opinions from recent grads or current students–especially regarding cuts, the quality of the faculty, and the safety of the school. Any and all comments are welcome…we want to make an informed decision. Thanks!

I’m also a BFA MT at Millikin, and in the Honors program as well. I have had some very positive experiences with the school and MT program, and also some negative ones. However, I truly believe that that is what happens regardless of what school one attends. If anyone would like some honest feedback, feel free to message me! (:

Missjavert, I sent you a PM :)

replied!

I should also add that I’m a sophomore, and am on the other side of the infamous Hurdles, if anyone has any questions pertaining to that. (:

I just transferred out of the program, but that doesn’t mean I only have negative things to say about the school. I’m the same class as miss javert (who is totally not good at being incognito at all-- ) and also have experienced the hurdles, the drama, the ups and downs. Feel free to ask me any questions! :D

Hello Milliken BFA MT students,
My son was just accepted to the BFA MT program, have some questions for you in terms of the hurdles. Are the hurdles only after Freshmen year or do you go thru hurdles every year? Also for those who will be graduating soon, do you feel prepared to market yourself and enter the work force as a performer? if you are more comfortable posting me privately my email is rsknp@sbcglobal.

so do students really drop out of the program after a while or are they “forced out”?
Is there stability in the program with the teaching staff- meaning is there alot of turn over?
Do the teachers give you resouces for summer employment for summer stock jobs?

@NPKPmomma, I am not a current student but I visited Millikin and it is one of two schools that I am debating on. From what I heard from students, the hurdles are only at the end of Freshmen year, not every year. I can’t really answer the other questions but I just thought I’d answer that since I received information from the department directly when I was there.

Also, when I was visiting, there were many students gone for the weekend that were in St. Louis and other cities auditioning for summer stock, so I’m pretty sure they do put importance on helping their students network and get summer work.

I’ve heard that they do have kids drop out, but that will happen at many schools when students realize that this is not what they want to do for the rest of their lives. As far as being “forced out,” I think what happens at hurdles is that you can either ‘pass,’ be ‘redirected’ to the BA in Theatre or another program, or be put on ‘probation’ in any areas of voice, acting and dance, and then you will go through the hurdle process again either after 1st or 2nd semester of your sophomore year, depending on what area you were put on probation for. I hope that makes sense; that’s what I was told from current students.

Hope that helps!

thank you for your input

How do I PM to talk with current students about MILLIKIN?

I will say that Millikin IS extremely dangerous. I mean, all the other complaints on here are extremely valid: rude professors especially so. The professors and the safety of campus are the main reasons I’m transferring. It’s also extremely inconvenient to them if you have a job off campus, but you can’t get a job on campus unless you qualify through FAFSA. At $15,000 a year after a half tuition scholarship, I have to find some way to pay for this education. All in all, I wouldn’t honestly recommend this university to anyone.
