Milton

Hey, I have some questions about Milton I thought you guys may be able to answer:

How selective is Milton?

How difficult is it to gain admission for junior year? Since you can only apply as a boarder I'd imagine they get many less applicants, especially since they only have 50% boarders.

How does it compare to other top tier schools I.E: Hotchkiss, SPS, etc.

Thanks for your time,

It’s in the same tier/rigor as “other top tier schools” in case you’re still wondering. And yes, I assume it’s equally selective (15%-20% acceptance rate).

I actually e-mailed one of the admissions officer about the acceptance rate, he said it was 20-25%.

Ah, my bad. Should’ve checked out their BSR profile before wild guessing.

I’m pretty sure you don’t only have to apply boarding as a new junior. I’m a junior at Milton, and there’s a guy in my class who’s a new junior day student. Also, you are right that less people are accepted, but less people are applying, so keep that in mind…

Yeah, I heard that parents were reluctant to let their kids apply because they heard students at Milton have too much freedom constantly leave campus unchaperoned. I can’t really say for sure because I don’t go there but I see the school almost everyday and it really isn’t as wild as people on CC make it out to be.

hi, you might note milton historical acceptance rate is 20 - 25%, but last year maybe a little lower - i think slightly less than 20%.

speciafically, the new enrolled students in milton website (143 new students started in 2012) include those from k8 (maybe 40 - 50)
[Today's Miltonians](http://www.milton.edu/admissions/miltonians_today.cfm)

if you include exclude those, then the admission rate fall below 20%

also i just been to milton last week, and was the 2016 class (class started freshman) is the smallest class they had because the year before (2015 class) their yield was much higher than historical. is recently their acceptance rate may be a little smaller than historical (which is 20 - 25%)

you might note that in the current milton website, class ii (junior) is now only for boarders

My daughter is a new Class III boarder and our experience has been that the boarders are carefully supervised - I would not describe it as a place where kids constantly leave campus unchaperoned. It seems to be a place where kids are encouraged to use good judgment as opposed to one where there is a thick handbook filled with everything you can and cannot do. When we left campus after our initial visit, we both said we would feel very comfortable having our daughter board there.

In terms of selectivity - it is a selective and rigorous school. For this year, they accepted only 15 new Class III kids (not sure how many applied).

Our impression is that all of the kids there are smart - and class are rigorous and challenging - but not cut-throat like some of the other top tier schools. When she applied last year, she also looked at Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Exeter among others and felt that Milton was the number 1 choice.

GG was waitlisted at Milton in 2012 with a letter that gave stats that indicated about 17% acceptance for high school.

How much would it help my application by being from a non-currently represented southern state?
