I was interested in buying a mini refridgerator that would fit my son's dorm room requirements. It needs to only use 3 amps to start it up and 1.5 amps to run it. I was going to buy the Black & Decker one at Walmart for $79 but I found out that it uses 6.5 amps to start up. If anyone has any advice as to where I could find an alternative one can you please let me know because we are running out of time before he has to move in and I cannot find any ones that fit the specifications.

Regulations vary by college. Some (like Northeastern) only allow “micro-fridge” units, available for rent or purchase through the school. They are designed for efficient power usage and I think turn off the fridge unit when microwave is on.

DS’s roommate purchased a microfridge. We paid him same as rental fee.

Definitely look at the school’s Web site to check cubic limits. I know my school maxes them at 4.0 while others limit them to 2.0. It varies. If you can’t find the answer just call or e-mail someone in the housing department.

The one my Mom gave me as a birthday gift she got from Kmart. This is the one:

It’s nice and bigger on the inside than it looks. Taller than I was expecting though. I would recommend checking out your local Kmarts, Targets, Walmarts, and Bed Bath & Beyonds to see what they have after finding out what your son’s school allows.
