I recently bought a mini fridge for my dorm room, not knowing my college has a size limitation of 4 cubic feet. My fridge is 6.5 cubic feet, however it is non-refundable so I don’t want to have to buy another. How big of a deal would it be if I bring the 6.5 cubic feet fridge? Is there anything my college would do to me, like fine me?
Depends on the college in question but I would guess that your biggest problem with be space in your room and not whether you will get caught. Move in is chaotic and I doubt anybody will have a measuring tape out and you can even leave it in the box if you were that nervous.
Your RA will probably do checks at least once during the semester but once again, not sure if they will care enough to measure. That depends on the college. I’d post on your college Facebook page if they have one (or if it is popular enough, post under the subforum here), to see what older students have to say.
Depends on your college, but DS’s is pretty strict, not only about size but type of minifridge. It has to have a specific energy rating and safety features. You might be able to get more detail on the housing website.
As it turns out, my kid’s dorm already had a fridge (not common). And except for the one time that he had to be woken up (my request from downstairs), no one ever went into his dorm for the whole year AFAHK. The school seems to be very strict on where you have to rent your fridge from, in the dorm rules.
Honestly, I doubt the college would actually check. I had the same situation, the school never bothered. If the RA’s check, just offer them some hush food as I always call it lol.
