Minifridge question???

So I really, really, really don’t want to share my roommates’ hand-me-down minifridge. This is my first time in a dorm that will allow them though so I’m unsure if it’s okay for me to bring one.

The website for the dorms states “Be sure to talk with your roommate(s) to avoid doubling or tripling up on the bigger items like TVs, microwaves, rugs, video game systems, and refrigerators” but I’m not sure if that means we can’t both have one or if they just recommend that we don’t have more than one. If they don’t expressly deny it, is it okay for us both to have one?

I had some rough experiences sharing a full sized fridge with roommates in an apartment the last two years and I’m hoping that having our own can avoid that situation. If anyone can help me out, that’d be great. The college is Medaille College in Buffalo if someone has had first-hand experience there.

So to clarify, you’re in a dorm room, right? Because I highly doubt you will be able to fit two mini-fridges, if that’s the case. My first suggestion would be to talk to your future roommate about your concerns; maybe they’ll be able to help reassure you.

She’s convinced one will be enough, but I’d still feel better if we each had our own especially because she’s never lived in a dorm with other people before. It’s not a typical dorm room it’s a suite style room. It’s slightly bigger and we share a bathroom with our RA.

Email the office of resident life or whatever it’s called and ask if you can have your own small separate mini fridge because you are phobic about sharing. You will then have definitive proof that you can or can’t have your own. My sons school specifically says only one per room but school rules vary wildly. I did find out they go in the dorm rooms and unplug fridges during Winter Break which seem obtrusive.

I have sent them an email, but they are terrible at responding in a short time. I need to decide so I can order one before I have to move in and I’m worried that waiting on their response will not leave me with that time. And unplugging the fridge for longs breaks seems reasonable. My last school we had to unplug everything before we left. If we didn’t they’d do it for us and charge a fee for leaving the room in an “Improper state”.

Call them.

It’s not impossible. My brother has always needed a second personal minifridge to keep his insulin. Just call and make sure

My college allows multiple fridges. My roommates and I are considering getting a second one depending if we have room, since three people (vegans, might I add) sharing one mini fridge sounds like bad news. Just call res life, as everyone else has suggested, because it varies at every college

I don’t think I know anyone who has been in a standard-sized double room and had two minifridges, but I do know a few people in triples and quads who have had at least two. More people, plus more space. I imagine they allow it, but it might take up a lot of extra space.

Most people are perfectly fine sharing a minifridge with one roommate (besides cases like those of the above poster’s brother). Last year, my minifridge would occasionally get pretty full, but everything my roommate and I needed always fit.

That wording from the school sounds like a reminder to help people make use of the space, not a strict edict banning 2 minifridges. But of course, it’s best to ask for clarification.

Remember, though, that you’re not going to be making all your meals out of a minifridge; I assume you have a meal plan, and the fridge is primarily for snacks, leftovers, and late night meals. You’re probably not going to need a ton of space.
