Many of the grad school programs I am looking at say that have a minimum undergrad GPA of 3.0. My GPA was 2.98, but I spent my Freshman year at another school where my GPA as a 3.21. Will this be taken into account by these grad schools, or will they just see my GPA from the school I got my degree at, and just throw out my application? Also, does anyone else have experience with having a GPA that close to a 3.0, and still getting in even if it says minimum 3.0 gpa?

I’m not sure about the first part of your question, as it may vary from school to school. As for the second part of your question, the 3.0 minimum GPA is the minimum GPA to be considered and the people accepted to these programs are usually higher than 3.0. If your GPA was 2.98, some schools may round it up to 3.0 as they only go one decimal out instead of two. However, you’d need to be very competitive in other aspects to be admitted with a 3.0 GPA.

Also, this could be better answered in the Graduate School sub-forum than the College Life sub-forum.

Big schools get probably thousands and thousands of applications so I would say they are going to throw yours away without even looking at it.

There are people that have gotten in despite meeting the minimum GPA. However, realize that most (if not all of them) had something to off set that. If you have a number of related work experience, related volunteering experience, related research experience, related published journal work – things like that, then the adcoms might look over the sub-3.00 GPA.

Things like letters of recommendations you can’t really control since you can’t dictate what they write about you. But stuff like a sparkling statement of purpose will do such wonders, along with a good GRE (or whatever test) score and writing samples.

At worst, if you get rejected from all of your schools, you can spend some time accumulating related experience in your intended field for a couple of years and re-apply. That is what I plan to do if I get reject from all four of my schools next year

What are you going to grad school for, if you don’t mind sharing?

Yea, I realized that I should have posted this in the Grad School fourm…sorry about that, if someone could move it, that would be great.

MushaboomBlue: I’m looking at grad programs in sports management. I have a good amount of experience in that field with various internships and jobs (although, if you know anything about sports management, so does everybody that applies) Currently i’m working in the athletic department of a college in my hometown. I’m not in any hurry to go to grad school thought…my plan is to figure out more specifically what I want to do within sports management, decide if grad school is necessary while getting some more work experience. If I were go take the grad school route, i’d be starting Fall 2011 at the very earliest, but more likely looking at a start date of Spring or Fall of 2012.
