I’m enrolled in 8 units, and got a message from my school saying:
Beginning the first day of classes (August 24th), your Pell Grant award will be adjusted depending on the number of units in which you are enrolled.
What are the enrollment requirements?
12 units or more = full-time award
9 – 11 units = three-quarter time award
6-8 units = half-time award
However, I dropped units and now i’m only enrolled in 3 units. What is the minimum for pell? I’ve read I can still get a reduced amount for 3 units and other places are saying I need to be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units. The above email from my school just says half time award for 6-8 units.
The minimum for Pell is 1 unit. Your award is paid at 50% of the annual award if you take 12+ credits in a semeser. At 9-11, you are paid 37.5% of the annual award for the semester. At 6-8, you are paid 25% of the annual award for the semester. At 1-5, you are paid 12.5% of your annual award for the semester. $721 for the term at 3 units.
There are some variations for those at the very top of the Pell EFC scale. The above is true for 0 EFC, though.
Even if you can add a class late, if it is after the drop/add period is over, your Pell cannot be adjusted upward for the additional credits (federal rules).
Pell is not school-specific. The rules are the rules … and believe me, there are plenty of rules! (I used to manage the Pell program at a large state U.)
If your daughter received full Pell but isn’t taking any classes with credits, I am assuming she is in some type of required internship and that she had to pay tuition for it. In that case, the school certifies that the course load is full time … so technically, she is getting the award because she is full time. This is rare.
