Hi I'm a US senior interested in applying to McGill, but im worried about the minimum cut off scores. On their website it says that the minimum scores are between a 620-640 for CR and for math are between a 560-630. My score for math was a 660, but my CR score was a 600 (writing 620 but I don't know whether or not they look at this). I took the ACT and got a 27, which makes the minimum cut off, however, my reading score was a 21 (the other sections were all 28s or 29s) and their "cut off" for each section is between a 24-25. I am retaking both next month but I can't guarantee that I will get any higher. It seems stupid that they would immediately discard my application just because I am a few points below the minimum cut off scores but is this what they really do? I'm pretty sure I have good enough grades to get into mcgill, im just worried about the test scores. I'd most likely be applying as an economic major, if that makes any difference.

There is no hard and fast rule-but the minimums are generally just that--you have to meet those scores to even be considered for admission.Once you meet the minimum, your grades can help you. But keep in mind that your scores may have to be significantly higher than the minimum; it all depends on the applicant pool. Admissions is entirely numbers driven, no ec's or essays or recommendations. It is based on merit alone.
I would suggest you take the tests again and submit whichever is better for you, SAT and two SAT II's OR
the ACT. Good luck.

i'd recommend to take the test again- the minimums rise every year.

McGilldad's suggestion to take the ACT is a good one. The SAT is not the only test. You may do better with the ACT.

Hey thanks for your help. I retook the SAT and got a 2000- 660V, 670M, and 670W. I also got my SAT IIs back with a 770 US Histoy, 710 Math 1, and a 650 on Chemistry. I got my 2nd act back too but im not even gonna bother to post what i got...
How much weight do they put on test scores when factoring in admissions? Ive heard they put a lot of weight on academic rigor, and only pay attention to your 1st semester grades of senior year (If your coming from the US) is this true?

in order of importance:

test scores

course rigor

grades

Where did you hear that they only look at the first semester of senior year? If this is true, d has had high school send grades in too early.

i guess it was just an assumption i made because when i saw the stats for this years admitted freshmen on their website they only posted the average GPA for grade 12 for students from the united states. it wouldnt seem right that they would only look at 1st sememster senior year grades though and not take into account grades from sophomore or junior year (im pretty sure they dont look at freshman year)

mcgill says they look at 10th, 11th, and 12th. however, the more recent the grades, the more heavily they are weighted in the admission decision, ie 1st semester 12th grade is the most important, while 10th grade is the least.

it doesnt seem right that they would mostly concentrate on first semester grades senior year, since thats only one semester of work

its your most recent.
