I have seen this major offered at several schools, and it looks interesting. Does anyone know what a mining engineer does day to day and what work conditions are like, etc. also what is the pay like and the major like if anyone knows.

Is there a decent outlook for this profession, both inside and outside the US? I have heard some majors will go and work in a mine then go back to grad school where they basically can write their own ticket. It this career in any way related to geology or geophysics say if you wanted to get a grad degree in those areas?

Thanks

I live in the largest gold mining area in the world here in Northern Nevada. The can never get enough engineers where I live, small town in the desert and nobody wants to live here. The engineers I know have to go out in the field somewhat but I believe they are in offices most of the time. There are more types of mines than just gold, but here is some information on the two largest companies…newmont.com barrick.com I also know a geologist who now works for newmont, he’s been out of school probably five years. He works for exploration, and he is constantly travelling an hour or two from Elko, but he hikes around in the hills alot. I assume he is checking drilling samples to find out where the gold is. I think metalurgist is one of the most in damand degrees around here.
