Mining or Petroleum Engineering?

Which one would you choose and why?

I would select Petroleum Engineering as that is a 9-10 billion dollar/day industry with huge upside potential. Despite what anybody says, oil and natural gas will provide the world’s main energy source throughout our lifetime.

Depends on what you can handle. From what I’ve seen at PSU is this:

Chemical/Mechanical Engineering dropped out (Engineering dept) and switched to Petroleum Engineering (Earth and mineral Dept) while thinking Petroleum Engineering is easy. If they can’t hack it in Petroleum Engineering, they jump to mining.

To major in Mining or Petroleum Engineering, you better love your selected career (Both are quite get down and dirty type of jobs).

Mining because explosives >> drills :D

Petroleum eng is not a “get down and dirty” job. As far as physical work goes. That rig hand/roughneck work is saved for the guys with no diploma. I found that out the hard way… Thought it would involve a lot of working out in the field/outside, but holy hello- the jobs are mostly office/computer/lab computations ; it’s a get down and dirty in the books job schooling for it… Down and dirty as in pulling frequent all-nighters and suffering the ailments ( I have hallucinated from sleep deprivation, and no. It is not as cool as it may sound). I don’t recommend getting on any stimulants either. They’ll just run you so hard you collapse because your workload is so insane. Nevertheless, the price of oil is only going up. Selling oil is like running legal drugs, and you future petroleum engineers are the top dogs in providing the commodity that everyone is addicted to. You can’t lose

Oh, as far as your question goes… Go petro if you’re up to it. Any mining company will hire a petro engineer, but not necessarily the other way around. Like o boy said; if it’s too much switch to mining or geology or something

Wow, #Mawabawa#. Your comment went straight deep into my bones. Why? because I am currently a transfer student to either NMT(hoping for scholarships by June), CSM (too expensive), or KU (in-state). My chances of being at KU is 90% but I want to go to either NMT or CSM, but as I said financial difficulties. After reading your comment, I now understand what it means to be a Petroleum Engineer, it isn’t about the money but about what we are going to do everyday for the rest of our lives. P.S Do you think a Petr degree from KU (University of Kansas) is any good?

I am looking for an internship, I am senior in petroleum engineering. But I realize that you have to be referred or know someone in those petroleum companies to get an internship. My phone number is 443-813-3018. My email is nagha12@yahoo.fr
