Minnesota over Madison?

Who else besides me is turning down UW-Madison for the "U"?

Go gophers!

I don't think I would make that choice... it varies.

I was looking at a website ( google: students review) and University of Minnesota- Twin Cities surprisenly was at about 59% for students who would want to return. This was the lowest I can remember seeing, while other schools were well in the 70%+ range.

that's **************.com

weird, why the forum block the website's name?

I'm undecided. I'd rather go to Madison (better overall engineering department, several people there I know who absolutely love it, great town, closer to home) but as of right now I'd be paying almost $9000 more to go to Madison than Twin Cities due to a nice schollie offer from UM-TC. So unless I win a couple scholarships contests I'm entered in right now I'll probably be turning down the Badgers for the Gophers.

if it comes down to the two, i would probably choose the u over madison.

They're both great schools, and I think UW-Madison is probably a little bit better academically. But I would chose Minnesota just because of the location. Who wants to be in Madison (which isn't a bad city) when you could be in the heart of one of the best cities in the nation!?!

I think I'm turning down madison for UMN...mainly because of cost and location. ^ AT9 is right, minneapolis is awesome!

Ahh soo many of us in the same position. I dont know which one I will choose yet. Being from Minnesota I dont know how I feel about being a Badger.

"Who wants to be in Madison when you can be in Minneapolis."

Someone who wants a full "college experience." Minneapolis is an awesome city but I'd never want to go to college there.

I live in a Minneapolis suburb and would never even apply to Madison. My mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, and uncle all went to the U and I could never be a Badger. I have done very well in HS thus far though, so UMN looks like a saftey that I wouldn't mind going to. Gotta have those, though.

DFox, thanks for your helpful comment, it contributed greatly to the thread.

On a brighter note, don't worry Jota, you'll meet lots of other people (from MN, WI, and abroad) that have made the same decision. In the end it all comes down to where you'll be happier, which in turn will allow you do better.

"Someone who wants a full "college experience." Minneapolis is an awesome city but I'd never want to go to college there."

They don't have parties and drinking at UMN? Seriously, I've heard that phrase so many times but I have no idea what it really means.

-Great education
-World class city
-Bars, night clubs, museums, shopping, restaurants, etc. all within walking distance
-School spirit
-Awesome and convenient campus

UMN has all of those, but what's still missing to make it a complete college experience? Don't get me wrong, if you prefer UW over UMN than by all means chose UW. The middle of a big city is not for everyone, and although I've only driven through Madison on the freeway, I've heard good things about it. I'm not saying that one campus is better than the other, but I fail to see what's missing from the college experience you'd get at UMN. And as a side note, I think the new football stadium will help UMN's perception on the issue quite a bit.

Honestly, if you're going to live outside the state or try and get a job outside of MN trust me go to Madison or else you won't be competitive. The recognized schools from that area are Mich. Ann Arbor Madison U of Chicago and NorthWestern. No one outside that region gives U of M any recognition at all! In the big picture, nationally, U of M is a little tiny fish in a very big pond, but inside Minnesota the U of M is the only fish in the pond if you follow me. I lived in MN for my whole life and now live in Cali, so I've seen both sides.

There seems to be an element of truth in ThatsWhatSheSed's argument. Of the people I know, the graduates of UW Madison were hired by corporations all over the country (incl Wall Street, Bay Area, Big 6 etc). For some reason, the graduates of UMTC ended up in working in the Twin Cities (although I don't see anything wrong with that). It could very well be that those who prefer UMTC over Madison prefer Twin cities for employment four years later - for arguably the same reasons.

Although I think Madison is a wondeful college town and UWM ranks a bit above UMTC in most departments, I would still prefer UMTC for reasons of my own.

I think it all depends on what you want to do after graduation. If you want to work in Chicago I think you'll be fine at either school. Yes, UW may have a little more sway out on the coasts, but if you really want to work in wall street go to school out East. Most cities tend to hire grads from the area, with exception to Ivy's, MIT, Stanford, etc.

There are a lot more jobs available in Mpls-StPaul than there are in Madison so it is natural that more graduates stick around.
