Hello Everyone,
I’m in my 2nd semester pursuing a Bachelor’s in International Relations and planning on double minoring but I’m not completely decided on what yet. I’m looking for a little advice or suggestions to my current plan.
A little about me:
I am a transfer student at FIU in Miami coming from Valencia in Orlandowith an AA with a Specialization in International Business. I am 38 years, study and work full time as a bartender, as well as have a child on the way. I chose FIU because UCF was trying to force me to retake 60% of my already passed classes, and FIU seems to offer much better career opportunities (Orlando job market is extremely low wage).
I chose BA in IR because of my interest in State and Economic development and relations. Math is a massive handicap, failed College Algebra 6 times (would have a 3.5+ GPA if I never tried taking it), but writing comes very natural and enjoy reading. I enjoy what I’m studying knowing full well how hard it is to apply to a career, my reasoning is it would probably be better to graduate with high grades in this degree than waste money failing more math classes in a business major.
My Question:
I am looking at an Economics minor, as I satisfied the intro courses already and need 4 more ECO/ECS (I’ll need 1 anyway to satisfy GL requirements), and a Business minor (No algebra required for a minor).
Are these good minors to pair with an IR major?
Other minors offered are Supply Chain, Marketing, Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Project Mgt, or E-Marketing.
Does my AA Specialization in Intl Business carry any weight that I should abandon the Business minor and select another minor I just listed?
Also, are minors more preferable than a Certificate?
BE HONEST, how much of a handicap will my age be?
My Goal:
I’m not cemented in a career path, FIU seems to have very active intern partnerships. I have over 15 years of hospitality and management experience and WANT OUT. I am over dealing with rude tourists, drunks making death threats, working 10 to 15 hours (slow season) then 60-100 (busy season) hours a week, and every Night/Weekend/Holiday.
