Minor? Double Major?

So, today I picked my first semester classes:
Japanese
Multidisciplinary Class (required)
Mod. European History
Education

I am thinking about majoring in IR but am not sure but I put the Mod. European History class in there because it's required. Education is in there as something to test out.

My question, with an IR major I could easily get both a minor done in Economics and History. But do minors really matter? Or is it really a just a for the student's enjoyment? If so I wouldn't do both minors, just History.

Also, for a double major, same question does it help? Does it take more than four years (no minor)?

Minors pretty much are only for the student. They don’t listed on your degree and employer’s won’t be too eager to learn what you minored in. Double majors on the other hand do matter and will show up on your degree. It depends how closely related the subjects are (if you planned ahead with IR & History, it’s doable in 4), some take 5-6 years.
