Minor in Bio?

I've pretty much decided I'm majoring in Economics. I've always had the intention of majoring in Biology as well, but my main interests have shifted to Econ.

However, I still would like to pursue Biology and am thinking of minoring in it. I'll most likely go into business upon graduation(don't know which field yet, exactly), so everyone around me tells me minoring in biology would be quite useless.

Any opinions on this? I've heard that if I have SOME biology background, it may give me a leg up in getting a job in fields such as biotech/research investment. Thanks in advance to everyone who responds!

My 2 Cents:

It probably won't help much. Minor's aren't really anything to tout about, and I've never seen one give anyone a leg up, though it won't hurt.

If you want to get into the business (including investment) side of biotech/pharma I would target those types of companies for interns and jobs, rather than try and educate yourself on what they are doing. Most of the business types I work with do not have a biology background (I'm an engineer in Biotech). The sales guys are good at sales, the planners are good at planning, and the product managers are good at marketing or whatever they do. They learn the science side of the job from being on the job, the technical knowledge is not something a degree will help with.

Also, something to consider, look into VC firms that invest in biotech or consulting firms that focus on biotech. Find out what they look for in an employee, and do that. It has been my experience that most guys on the VC side will have a masters or PhD in some hard science, an MBA or JD, and then years of experience in the industry in which they invest. Consulting however is generally full of MBAs with various backgrounds.

What does this say? Why not a BS/BA in Biology and an MBA? Or, like I said earlier, target the companies in the industry you want to work with the Econ degree.

Thanks for your reply! Your advice was really helpful. I guess you are right, a minor would be fairly useless. I WOULD major in biology but I dont have the financial ability to go to business school upon graduation and thus I feel an Econ degree will give me a wider range of job opportunities in the short run (correct me if I'm wrong) Any opinions on this?
