Can students outside the school of Computer Science get the minor is CS? Specifically, students in the humanities department... I know the Engineering school has a few non-engineering student minors, but I figure that no students actually IN the school of CS would need to earn a minor in the subject, so am I right in assuming that this minor is available to all students?

Yes, as far as I know, you should be able to minor in CS if you are in H&SS. The only thing is that CS majors get priority for a lot of classes, and it can be hard to schedule the classes you need sometimes. However, it should definitely be doable.

My son is in H&SS-economics, minoring in CS. He’ll even be able to graduate in 3 years (our bank account is grateful :)). He hasn’t had any problems getting the CS classes he wants, for the most part. One was full, but the teacher told him to show up anyways, and fairly soon, enough people had dropped the class and he was able to get in. You have many choices for which CS classes are applicable (there are some tough ones required), but there are options for what to take. He’s actually getting credit for one of his CS classes by being a TA. Very, very doable minor if you’re interested in CS. But no CS classes at CMU are easy, (my impression) so people don’t do this casually.

Minors in CS are difficult especially because of 211 and 251. Its not for the fainthearted but very fun just the same. As far as I know, you won’t have any problems trying to minor in CS.

Actually, I believe you can take 213 OR 251 (213 probably isn’t for the faint of heart either, right?) At least there are some choices.

Correction. I agree with busdriver. You can skip 251 - GTI by taking C and Unix (123) AND Intro to Systems (213).

Hi CaliforniaDancer, Is it easy to get accepted to CS minor for CFA Art major freshman students? Are there any requirements that are needed for being accepted to CS minor?

As far as I know, you don’t have to be accepted into the CS minor; you simply have to take the appropriate classes. From what I’ve heard, getting into the classes you need can occasionally be a challenge, but is ultimately doable with careful planning.
