Minor in Finance or Mandarin?

Right now im an econ major and im deciding whether on minring in Finance or learning mandarin. Which do you think would be more beneficial? BTW i would problably do an mba in finance in the future.

In general minors aren’t very useful. However, in your case, a finance minor is more useful strictly for the relevant coursework. Unless you are planning to work for a firm that wants mandarin-speaking employees, don’t bother with Mandarin (unless, of course, you are truly interested in it).

Funny you should ask: Brian put a related article up on his site today.

[Languages in Investment Banking | Mergers & Inquisitions](http://www.mergersandinquisitions.com/languages-investment-banking/)

You essentially need to be at native speaker level for language skills to matter, apparently.

haha i read that article too thats one of the reasons i made this thread ;)

My D1 has spent years learning mandarin, she is still not fluent & can’t read or write adequately top get hired anyplace where the language skill matters.

She says it’s feasible to develop a speaking proficiency, but the written language is really hard for a westerner with no prior background to learn.
