Hi I’m currently a freshman at Tufts and majoring in Quantitative Economics and minoring in finance. I’ve been thinking of either adding in a minor in math or an applied mathematics major. I’m considering a career in investment banking/finance (maybe on Wall st? not sure just an idea) and I’m not sure if I’ll be attending grad school right after undergrad. I was wondering would having a whole applied math major be worth it?
For the math minor at Tufts, you have to do real analysis I and abstract algebra I. Those are hard, very conceptual courses that will be different from the “engineering math” you’ve done up to this point. Might be worth it, or you might have them, hard to know. But the nice thing about a minor is it’s low commitment.
For the applied math major, in my observation of Harvard classmates, that can lead to serious money. But I’d recommend doing it on its own if that’s what you decide you want, not as a double major.
I think a major in Quant Econ with the Finance minor is great. You don’t need to do more.
Also, I thought Tufts didn’t allow double minors. (At least it did not as of seven years ago.)
@RelicAndType I’ll probably try to go for a math minor and see how it goes Thank you!
@WCASParent I’ll check in with that! Thank you.
Also, does anyone have any idea of the placement in IB or Wall Street for Tufts?
