I'll be going for a biophys or biochem major, so i'm wondering which minor is better, stat or physics? When I mean better, I mean which one looks better on an application and is more useful further on (pre-med in my case, probably). My stat teacher boasts about the universal importance of stat, it's demand, practcality, etc. My physics teachers have went on about how stat is needed in physics anyway, so physics is better. What do y'all think?

If you change your mind about med school, or can’t get in, what career do you see yourself pursuing?

@Dunboyne I’m not too sure, but if i don’t get in, my parents would probably kill me, so…yeah… it’ll probably be either pharmacology, biochemistry, or biophysics (something bio or chem related).

–How many times have you taken the SAT? What are your scores (composites/breakdowns)?

–In what subjects have you graded consistently best over high school?

–On another thread, you expressed concern over some aspects of biology, and seem to favour social sciences. Are your parents pushing you toward med school, or is this a deep-down, genuine interest of yours?

–What are your 3 favorite subjects? Be honest. If they’re social sciences, so be it.

@Dunboyne

–First SAT (oct. 2015): CR-540, Math-650. Writing-550 (1740)
–Second SAT (nov. 2015): CR-610. Math-620, Writing-550 (1810 super-score)
–Third SAT(dec.): CR-About the Same, Math-Better, Writing-Better (better super-score)
–ACT (next week)

–Best classes: Anatomy/Physiology, Chemistry (community college), History/Gov./etc., physics (above average, because too many super smart people take it)

–My parents are pushing me, but not too hard because I find a lot of its aspects interesting. I am, however, very interested in the social sciences. Despite this, I do find some aspects of biology interesting (anatomical, chemical, environmental, physical aspects pretty much).

–1. Social Sciences
–2. Anatomy/Physiology
–3. Biochemistry (chem based bio)
–4(close 3). Physics (physical sciences)

Give some serious thought to majoring in biochem or physics (biophysics if available), then minoring in a favorite social science. Med school is GPA intensive, so minoring in a social science gives you an easier way of flipping around your major and minor, if necessary, in order to protect your GPA. I’m not saying that the social sciences are easier on GPA, in general, but they might be for you because you enjoy them so much. History, for example, is one of your best subjects, and it sounds like you could do well in a variety of social sciences. A happier student usually ends up with a higher GPA.

Med school prerequisites can be filled with most majors. I don’t think there is any evidence to prove that social science or humanities majors fare worse in med school than STEM majors. Med school is a different ballgame, where success depends more on the general academic aptitude and work ethic of the student.

So if need be, there’s nothing wrong with switching majors into a social science and keeping chem or physics as a minor. If you’re worried about job preparedness/income with the social sciences, then I’d suggest sampling a few courses in economics. Its ties to business make it a great hedge against unemployment. I’m not sure if you’ve had any exposure to it. It’s a very good field for abstract thought, so you might enjoy its “sense” aspects.

i think these questions are best asked to your school advisors. you should let other people decide what major is good for you.
