is it possible to minor in something at one of the others in the five college system?

Unfortunately not. You can get a "Five College Minor" or a "Five College Certificate" in something like Film Studies or Middle Eastern studies to accompany your Smith major, but that's a distinction you receive from the whole Five College system. You can't receive a minor (or a major) just from one of the other institutions.

Basically, your degree choices are: Major, Double Major, Major and Minor, or Major and Five College Certificate.

If one of the other colleges offers a lot of courses that are of interest to you, you can still take a bunch of courses at another school, but you won't be recognized for the minor.

thanks. if that is true, does anyone know how the creative writing outlets are? i want to be an english major, but i am also very interested in creative writing.

I've taken a couple of the Creative Writing courses and enjoyed them very much. Reading and Writing Short Poems was particularly good and the focus was learning and using different styles of poetry, from free form to ghazal. There's also courses in everything from regular short fiction to autobiography and memoir.

Something to keep in mind though, is that the English major is very much an English literature major. You can't get around taking either Shakespeare, Chaucer, or Milton, you have to do Methods in Literary Study, etc. So if it's really important to you to do just creative writing for four years, you might want to reconsider.

Of course, if what you want is an excellent English dept with great courses, some of which will be creative writing and some will be analytical, then you're in the right place.
