I know for sure that a want to major in mass communications with a focus on journalism, but I also would like to choose a minor to go along with that. I was thinking either a media and film minor, a creative writing minor, or an environmental science minor.
The only issue I have is that environmental science is so different from journalism that I don’t know if it would be too different to mean anything, and I think perhaps it’d be better to just take a creative writing class than actually minor in it. I also don’t know if it would be very beneficial to minor in media and film.
I thought about double majoring, but I know that costs a lot of money and often takes extra time, and I’m not sure if I would be able to handle the workload. If anyone has double majored before, it’d be nice to know just how much extra cost and time it might add as well as if the workload is really as intense as people say. I also want to know if a minor really is worth it, and if so, which of the ones I’m interested in would make the most sense? Thanks
I think minoring in env science would be cool because it’s a growing field where people make a decent amount of money.
Eons ago, I did a double minor in English and marketing and did an internship at the college Public Affairs office. The marketing classes later counted toward my MBA.
It depends on what your college payment structure is and what the two majors are. If the two subjects fit together well it might not cost anything extra / take any more time / be that much more work.
But: it sounds as if you aren’t even in college yet. If so, choose your college and go from there. Use your electives & distribution requirements to try classes in the secondary areas you are interested in and see what you like. Follow your real interests, esp for a minor, b/c 1) it is more likely to take you directions that you will like and 2) irl an ‘official’ minor / 2nd major doesn’t matter much after college. If you do journalism + ES, go for summer jobs that link the two. Come job application time a solid college performance + work experience will be what counts.
It depends on whether or not you intend to become a journalist. If so, though It’s not on your list, I would suggest economics. Journalists are notoriously bad at math and have little understanding of the economy. On your list, environmental science would probably be the most useful because it would make you marketable as a science writer. The other option is to take classes in several disciplines so you can develop a working knowledge of many topics you might encounter on the job. Jack of all trades, master of none.
The best thing you can do, though, is work on the student newspaper. Journalism is a very practical business that values experience. The time you would spend in a double major would be better served accumulating clips.
If you want to go to law school like many journalism students end up doing, go for the grades.
I’m already enrolled in college actually, I just don’t know if a minor is really worth it.
I would say yes, a minor is worth it. You will have to take the credits any way and the minor is just a focus. It shouldn’t take you any longer to graduate.
