Minor vs. Concentration

At my university I can add a minor or a concentration (in the same subject). I'm not sure which one will be more beneficial to me. Both would be shown on my transcript and neither on my diploma. Which one do you think would look better? (the concentration is 9 credits and the minor is 18 credits)

Don’t think about which looks better, think about which you would rather do. What subject would you like to take more classes in, and which program would allow you to do that?

I put down my concentration on my resume (especially since I got a certificate for it) because my major is very diverse.

Thanks for the replies!

Also, the minor and the concentration are in the same subject. So that’s not really the issue. I guess what I really meant to ask is if the minor is 9 credits more than the concentration does it look a lot better? Or does it really not matter?

I thought a minor was an exploration of a separate field - your major says “this is what I do best” and minor would say “but I’m good at this, too”
as where a concentration would generally be a “my major is broad, this is what I studied more intensely” (for example, I’m planning on a major in business administration, concentration in management or marketing, and a minor in information systems or computer science)

So, I guess if you’re choosing based on title only, is your minor/concentration a part of your major or a different department?

It’s a part of my major-my school allows us to do both. (I know it’s weird-most schools are like what you said)

What is your major and what is the minor/concentration that you’re considering?

Given that the minor would give you a more comprehensive study into the field, I’d tend to say that it’s “better” but that could depend greatly on what the fields are.

As others have mentioned, a concentration is usually something pertaining directly to your major, while a minor is a separate field, although it is likely going to at least be related to your major. A physics major would likely take a concentration in astrophysics, rather than minoring in astronomy. The same physics major could minor in math, but likely won’t take a concentration in math.

Im an English major with a secondary ed. minor and I am trying to decide between adding a creative writing minor or concentration (I can do either one and have room to do either one). I’m wondering which will look better on my resume from a hiring stand point.

Thanks so much guys!

If it’s not going to necessitate overloading on too many courses, I’d personally go with the minor. It’s going to involve more hours which equates to more experience. That’s always a good thing.

Which will look better on a resume? I don’t know that it would really make too much of a drastic difference either way. But, having the additional experience by going with the minor is certainly going to be a good thing.

I’ll keep all of this advice in mind-thanks guys!
