I’ve been admitted to UCD as a CSE major, and I’ve heard that doing a minor or dual major is easier as a CS major. How easy is it to have a minor as a CSE major? Should I switch to CS if I wanna minor? Specifically, I might wanna minor in Economics.

Hey, I’m also admitted to the CSE major and will be attending UC Davis this fall! I have done tons of research and apparently, there are tons of required courses that are already planed for CSE major so it’s definitely difficult to have extra time and effort to complete a minor. CSE major is not as flexible as other majors in which you have many space for electives. So yes, you might consider switching.

Hey, CS major here going into my third year. Yeah, if you want flexibility you’ll want to switch to CS. Personally, I chose CS over CSE because I wanted to double major, and for a minor I’d also recommend switching for the added flexibility. You can always take additional CS classes once your actual requirements are done, after all. Though, one possibility is trying to use your elective units to fulfill a minor. I don’t know anyone who’s done that though, so I can’t say how effective it is.

If you do decide to switch, it’s as simple as waiting until winter quarter and going to Lori, the staff adviser for both majors, to sign off the paperwork. Keep in mind that you need to have completed at least ECS 30 in order to switch, but as a CSE already you’ll fulfill that by the end of winter quarter depending on if you start off with ECS 10 or ECS 30 in fall. In the meantime, the requirements have virtually no difference your first year, so you wouldn’t be losing time in either regardless of which one you decide to do.
