Hello! This fall, I'll be starting college in pursuit of a BArch. I'm also thinking about minoring/double majoring in something else too; I'm very interested in green design and technology. I know I have to take structures courses and whatnot, but I'd like to focus on sustainability, construction methods, etc, just as much as design itself. Do you know what major would fit this?

Maybe I should have asked this question first, but is it feasible to double major with architecture without killing myself? I've worked in an arch studio before and I've talked to students about the amount of work, I know it takes a lot of effort to produce good material.
But, I want to get the most out of my education, and college tuition is not cheap. :/

Thanks for reading my post!

College is expensive and you should get the most out of it. If you are interested in sustainability, or business, or construction technology, go take courses in those areas and learn as much as you can. Even a minor in one of these might be feasible. However, that is very different from trying to do a dual major. You will kill yourself and end up compromising the quality of your architectural education for a doubtful benefit.

rick12 is right. From what we have experienced with our s, who is a 2nd yr. Land Arch student, double majoring would be very, very hard. Even minoring is going to be tough I think, but you could look into it. The problem (at VT anyway) is that your design studio classes run very long…like 4+ hours (our son’s goes from approx. 1-5 M, W, F) To be able to sign up for enough classes to complete a major (even minor? depending on the program) in other areas you are blocked from doing so because of that. If you have enough credits, though, you may find that you can get some in during your later upperclassman years, but you will need to check into it and plan accordingly. It seems that the focus, once you get in, is to spend as much time in that studio as possible in order to produce your best work. (I know I am really questioning why we are even paying room and board to VT- every time we call/text the kid is in that studio! But, I am all for what you want to do in trying to expand your horizons and background. Just be aware it may not be enough to obtain a minor or major double degree.

Thank you for your replies!

I think I’m going to see how well I do during my first year, then I’ll see if I can handle a minor for my 2nd year. Again, thanks!
