Minoring in a foreign language?

As far as I can tell, liberal arts undergrads at Tufts don't have the option of minoring in French or Spanish. Why limit the option of a minor to less popular languages? As a premed student majoring in psychology (which doesn't fulfill any of the med school requirements), it would be almost impossible to double major in French and fit in all my required classes.

Is there any way around this? Right now, Tufts is one of my top choices, but continuing my French instruction is important to me.

These are actually quite the popular languages so they prefer that you get significant experience. Whether this is a significant reason or not is beyond me.
Fortunately enough, you'll probably place a few credits into the language part of the major if you are proficient enough because they have placement exams in the beginning of the first year.
Good Luck

Maybe it's because, with the intense foreign language requirement, Tufts doesn't want to essentially hand out minors to anyone who fulfills their distributions with subjects they took in high school.

If French is important to you, there is study abroad, both during the school year and the summer (Tufts in Talloires is fabulous!). Also, please don't make the mistake of thinking that a lack of a major or minor is any reason to not take courses. You can always note on your resume that you took classes and are proficient or fluent in the language.

ampersand, I am an incoming freshman at Tufts (starting in about a week =D), and I had a similar concern. I really wanted to continue spanish in college, and ultimately this was a big reason that I wanted to go to Tufts. A school with a heavy language requirement (which means good course selection when it comes to languages) & one of the best study abroad programs is the perfect place for someone who loves languages, whether or not they want to major in one).

In my quest for a little more depth in my language and cultural studies, i discovered this:

For spanish, Tufts does offer a minor in Latin American Studies, which has the language/literature/cultural requirements that would be similar to a minor in just the language. I'm not sure if there is a similar thing for french, but check out the school's website for more interdisciplinary programs like this one.

Hope this helps!
