I'm currently an undergraduate majoring in biology with an intent to apply to a medical school when I graduate. I'm also thinking about what I'll do if I don't get in to medical school. Would a minor in computer science be helpful should I apply as a computer programmer? I'm taking an Intro To Java class right now and I would say that the class is going well for me.

If you enjoy CS and are fairly good at it, then a minor would probably be smart. In the case that you complete your BS in Biology and don’t get into medical school, your minor in CS should cover most of the prerequisites for a MS in CS.

How many courses/credits is a minor at your school? Still, try to get in the following:

Object-Oriented Programming I (probably your Java course)
Object-Oriented Programming II (probably your Java course)
Discrete Structures (may be called Discrete Mathematics)
Data Structures
Operating Systems
Database Systems

That should be 18-20 semester credits and can get you into SOME junior/entry-level programmer positions.

would a minor in CS be sufficient to apply for a Master’s program for computer science?

It depends on the courses required for a minor. I think in most cases it will cover most of the necessary courses to enter a MS program, but it’s a school-by-school basis. If there are elective choices for the minor, then your choice of elective courses will play a role (taking an Operating Systems course vs. taking a robotics course or something like that).
