Minoring in something and being able to teach that?

I saw a thread with a person asking if a physics or biology minor would better suit his anthro major. A response included the pros and cons, and it was stated that with a minor he might be able to teach bio or physics at the high school level. Is this true?

I want to major in Chemistry or ChemE but always wanted to teach high school math. Would a minor in mathematics allow me to be able to teach math?

bump. i kind of had the same question as the OP

If you want to major in chem or chemE, why do you want to teach math rather than chem???

I don’t know… I just enjoy teaching math.

Its like you asking why someone wants to major in History but be a doctor, i guess. Different interests?

This really depends on what state you want to teach in. In NJ 15 math credits (or any other subject) will allow you to teach middle school level math. In order to teach secondary you need 30 credits of whatever subject you want to teach in.

Just keep in mind that you don’t get to pick the math you want to teach and as a new teacher you’ll probably be given the lowest math classes. In science, you do pick the science you want to teach.
