Minorities Admission

I believe the data is at the link below.

[IAS Historical Data: First-Time First-Year Applicants by Race](http://www.web.virginia.edu/IAAS/data_catalog/institutional/historical/admission/first_by_race.htm)

Last year, almost 50% of blacks were admitted, by far the highest %; the total acceptance rate was 36.7%.

So you can make one of two conclusions:

-black applicants to UVA are doing so with a set of credentials, test scores, and high school accomplishments that not only meet UVA’s tough guidelines, but also are far superior to every other racial class

OR

-UVA uses 2 sets of criteria and significantly lowers the bar for black applicants in order to admit a far greater % and admits a large number of blacks whose set of credentials, test scores, and high school accomplishments are inferior to all other applicant races.

Dean J…care to tell everyone which is correct?

Yes, that is the site actually. Looking through it, it appears that the acceptance rate for Hispanic students varies quite a lot. In recent years, hispanics are admitted at a higher rate than their white counterparts (not by much), in other years like 2001, 2000, 1996, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1991, etc, Hispanics were admitted at lower rates than their white counterparts. I guess it just depends on the applicant pool on any given year. And actually if you look at the transfer admission by race, Hispanics have gotten in at lower rates (some years substantially lower) in just about every single year.

I do not think UVa uses lower criteria when assessing minority applicants, based on the fact that the percentage of Native American applicants admitted is significantly lower than the general admission rate each year. Native Americans are very much underrepresented at colleges, and I can see a greater incentive to give them a break than to give it to African Americans. My guess is that there are a lot of white and asian students who are not qualified but have pushy parents who force them to apply, whereas the applicant pool for blacks is much stronger.
(you KNOW there are a ton of not particularly qualified kids applying to top schools every year. I still have no clue what they are thinking.)

I think as a state school UVA has somewhat of an obligation to try to make sure its’ instate student population represents Virginia’s population. That said, Virginia is about 19% Black and the UVA class of 2008 was about 10% Black, so it would appear Blacks are still underrepresented. Hispanics are 5% of Virginia’s population and made up 5% of the class of 2008.

There are several data sets online showing Blacks offered admission at UVA in recent years had significantly lower SAT scores than Whites offered admission and Hispanics also had slightly lower scores.
I would definitely question the policy of having lower criteria for admitting Blacks, if many of the Blacks admitted struggled at UVA and dropped out. However, UVA has one of the highest graduation rates for Blacks and in that achievement, UVA is fulfilling one of its responsibilities as a state school.
