First, I commend UO for their ongoing efforts on diversity. However, as an ethnic minority, recent race-related events give me pause about attending in the fall. The recent event (Nov 2016) involving the UO law professor wearing black face has brought to attention a number of disturbing race-related incidents at not only UO, but OSU. Although recent news has focused mostly on African American discrimination, it’s clear that racism extends to other races as well. I am Asian and interested in hearing from any current Asian students at UO regarding whether they have been subject to any racial discrimantion, subtle or otherwise. I grew up in a liberal area in CA, and want to make sure moving to OR is not a mistake. For those who are not up to date, just Google ‘Univ of Oregon and racism’ and you’ll get the background. Thanks
I’m prospective (Asian) student possibly going to UO in the fall, so I couldn’t say much about racism on campus. But I can say that racism is inevitably going to exist on every campus you go on, even in the most liberal areas. We don’t live in a world where a racist doesn’t exist within a 1 mile radius at every given moment. Nearly every college has had a run (or multiple) with severely racist individuals, and that’s something you are probably going to face no matter where you go, even if you decide to stay in liberal California. It’s just a matter of how the college either publicizes or conceals the issue. I will also say that Oregon is considered to be a very liberal state, and I’ve heard that the campus is as well. Also, OSU is an hour away, these schools are completely different. That being said, it’s ultimately your call where you receive an education for the next few years and I genuinely hope you make the right decision for yourself.
