Minorities

JHU is an affirmative action institution, correct? Does this have a heavy weight during the admissions review? What about geographic location?

1 more

Does JHU consider Middle Eastern as a minority? Because I am Middle Eastern and i was wondering if I could put it under the OTHER line on the ethnic groups section of the application.

This is off topic but I am wondering...when will the next Hopkins Insider Blog be up? They are extremely helpful and fun to read, thanks for your dedication.

No, JHU is not an affirmative action school. In fact, the Supreme Court rules against official affirmative action policies a few years back in a highly publicized case involving the University of Michigan.

Not being an affirmative action school does not mean we do not value diversity. We do and a student's race is a factor in our admissions decisions just as a student's gender, academic interest, ethnicity, extracurricular passions, etc. are factors. We want a diverse class in every way, shape, and form, and when evaluating applicants demographic information is considered. HOWEVER, these are supplemental factors; not determining factors.

As far as geographic location - since we recruit on a national scale and get applications from all 50 states and over 70 countries, location is not a diversity factor we really need to be concerned with.

In terms of ethincity, you have the option of reporting your ethnicity or not. Most Middle Eastern applicants will select "Other." It is important to note, that at Hopkins we have a classification of under-represented minority and that will only include students who select (1) Black, non-Hispanic; (2) Hispanic, Latino(a); (3) American Indian.

Finally, the Hopkins Insider blog will be updated soon. I have been quite busy, but working on a number of updated posts for the month of September.
