Minority Discriminating Schools

I was shocked to recently find out that many minorities (in particular Asians and Indians) feel as though they are subtly discriminated by their peers at Vandy.

I realize that this may be a stereotype against Vandy, but I’ve also noticed similar discussions on many other websites as well, so it may be that it’s not just a handful of CC students trying to spread rumors.

SO, are you guys aware of any other Top 20 schools that have student bodies like this? Or for that matter, have you noticed any other schools like this?

Now I realize that this may happen at any school, but it seems that the degree to which it happens is far more common at Vandy that some other schools, like Stanford. Or I may be completely wrong.

What do you guys think?

I suspect the reason this is perceived more at Vanderbilt is that, relative to other highly selective colleges (and especially those with strong STEM programs and reputations), it has fewer Asians enrolled. Stanford has a much stronger Asian presence. A young man recently started another thread about his admission prospects in the US. I believe he was an Asian applying from overseas, and completely dismissed Vandy as “not famous enough.” You can find out the racial make-up at most colleges if you are concerned, and then avoid those where they are under 10%.

@Woogzmama Very interesting, thank you! I will certainly do that

“…not famous enough.”

Do we really need more international students with this type of attitude?

Vanderbilt’s retention rate is 97% - one of the highest in the country. Also, minorities make up over 30% of the undergraduate student body. Most Asians I know enjoyed their experience, it is not really fair to typecast the whole community since one poster doesn’t like it. It is pretty rare.

Vanderbilt used to be only 2% Asian and is now over 10% (in just a couple of years). The Asian community is growing and thriving but it takes time.
